Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner Skipped the 2023 MTV VMAs for Very Different Reasons

Joe Jonas wasn’t at the MTV VMAs with the Jonas Brothers, who have just one nomination at the ceremony for Best Choreography (“Waffle House”).

But even if Jonas had gone, his estranged wife Sophie Turner was not going to be with him for one last award show. The actress was photographed far away from the Newark, New Jersey ceremony, filming her ITVX series Joan in Spain, according to photos posted on TMZ earlier today.

Jonas’ own absence isn’t surprising either. The brothers have a single nomination in a more minor category, and they’re not performing. They are also on tour. While they have no concert scheduled for today, their next show is on Thursday in Denver, pretty far from the East Coast. A flight there and back would’ve been a big trip for one potential award.

A source spoke to Page Six today about how the Jonas family had been rooting for the couple’s relationship prior to Joe’s filing for divorce. “It wasn’t working anymore. It happens,” the family insider told the outlet. “Joe has to do what he has to do, and same goes for Soph. Only they know what’s best for them and their family.” The source added, “The family loves her and the love she has for those girls [her two daughters with Jonas].”

Jonas and Turner released a joint statement days after their divorce was announced. They said:
