Is Joe Goldberg's Mom Still Alive and Living Next Door to Her Son?

If you've spent the holiday season binge-watching You Season 2 like we have, then you probably have a lot of questions. From who the hell Joe's new next door neighbor is (my guess is his mom), to whether or not Love is really pregnant, the list is literally endless.
One of the saddest aspects of Season 2, aside from all of the murders, was Joe's recollection of his mother. In a series of flashbacks, viewers finally found out what happened to Joe's mom, Sandy, and why the serial killer is quite as damaged and lonely as he is.
In the first episode of Season 2, Joe remembers being at the beach with his mom. We find out that she has a habit for disappearing, and leaving Joe on his own for hours at a time. She tells him to build her a sandcastle and that she'll be back soon. It's unclear where she's going or why she's leaving him.
By the penultimate episode of You Season 2, we discover that Joe grew up in an abusive household. While his mother had plans to leave her partner, she never did. Attempts at finding other men to take care of her and her son would often result in Joe being left alone for hours at a time.
The abuse escalated, and having watched his mother being beaten for so long, young Joe took action. In Season 2, Episode 9, it was revealed that Joe shot and murdered his mother's abusive partner in self defence. Taking the gun from her son's hand, Sandy told him, "You would never hurt anyone, and that's the truth."
In Season 2, Episode 10, Joe asks him mom, "Why did you let him come back over and over again?" "So you could have a dad," she tells him. Sandy blames herself for Joe's violence and says, "A boy needs a strong man to teach him right from wrong. I tried to give you that, but I failed." She continued, "What's wrong with you is my fault. I'm sorry." Joe is taken away by a social worker, and presumably never sees his mom again.
While it's unclear exactly what happened to Joe's mother, here's one theory: she's the neighbor that Joe spies through the fence in the Season 2 finale. While watching the climactic episode, BAZAAR.com's editors couldn't help but think that the neighbor looked a little familiar...
A plethora of viewers are pretty convinced that Joe's mom is going to play a major role in future seasons, too. Whether or not the serial killer's mom is his new neighbor, here's hoping we find out what really happened to her in You Season 3.
