Jodie Comer's Dramatic Golden Globes Dress Was No Match for Her "Graphic" Bun
Attending a nationally televised awards ceremony like the 2020 Golden Globes already calls for a major beauty-slash-fashion moment, but when you're one of the evening's nominees — and you face the possibility of giving a speech that will be seen by millions — well, that's a whole other ball game. And Killing Eve star Jodie Comer arrived on the show's red carpet in a structural green gown with a romantic, sleek, low bun styled by Harry Josh, looking wholly worthy of her nomination for best actress in a TV series—drama. As Josh told Allure, the key to creating Comer's look was to let her "bold and grand" dress do most of the talking. "When you have a dress with this kind of architecture, the hair needs to be graphic, clean, and chic," he said. But even a style as simple as a bun comes with challenges, he warned. "Not all buns are created equal! To get a red carpet, high-wattage, mega-shine, clean bun, product and tools are key."
The first step in creating one of Comer's biggest looks of the year was arguably the most important: prepping her wet hair with John Frieda Frizz Ease Original Serum. Josh spread a dime-size amount of the product, avoiding the roots to ensure the hair has enough grip and appears glossy rather than greasy. "Prepping the hair with a frizz product allows for the hair to be set from the beginning, which means this style doesn’t require many touchups," he said.
Naturally, wet hair with a healthy dose of anti-frizz serum calls for a blow-dryer, which led Josh to use his eponymous brand's Pro Dryer and Premium Oval Brush on Comer.
Because the goal was sleekness rather than volume, he made sure to pull the hair downward as he dried it for a "dramatic effect with no body," and then reached for his Ceramic Flatiron. "[I] smoothed the hair in small sections, touching up any dry ends with a small amount of Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Touch Up Crème for a polished look."
Josh used pins to secure most of the hair into a twisted bun at the nape of Comer's neck, leaving one small section to wrap around the side and tuck into the existing bun to create the "graphic" effect Josh was after — a small detail you wouldn't want to miss when Comer turned and twirled on the red carpet. After he locked the hair in place with Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray, the actor's golden-blonde hair was shiny enough to blind passersby.
