Joaquin Phoenix has spent a large chunk of his life in the spotlight, but because of his leading role in Joker, he has recently been faced with even more questions about his career and his personal life.

And while the 45-year-old actor is definitely no stranger to red carpets and award shows (this is his third Oscar nom), we actually know very little about his relationships (both past and present). For instance, who is Joaquin Phoenix’s wife?

1. Who is Joaquin Phoenix’s Wife?

Well, he doesn’t have one. But he is engaged (more on that later). Although Phoenix has dated a handful of people (both in and out of Hollywood), the award-winning actor has never actually been married.

It is worth noting that he once faked an engagement and pretty much fooled the whole world. In 2014, Phoenix appeared on the “Late Show” and told a story about a yoga instructor, who he later revealed to be his fiancée. “I think she’s the one,” Phoenix told Letterman. “I proposed to her, and she said yes.” Of course, the internet went wild, only to find out the following day that the entire story was made up. “I think my life is so boring and it seemed like something exciting to talk about,” Phoenix said on Good Morning America. Interesting. 

2. Who Has Joaquin Phoenix Dated in the past?

Previously, Phoenix has been linked to actress Liv Tyler, who he dated for three years in the late ’90s. He also dated actresses Jessica Joffe and Amelia Warner (who’s now married to Jamie Dornan).

After a few years of casual relationships and swirling rumors, the actor finally settled down with South African-born model Topaz Page-Green…well, for four years, that is.

There was also some talk about a possible romance between Phoenix and Lindsay Lohan (we’re not kidding). But the jury is still out on that one.

3. Who is he Dating Now?

Phoenix has been dating actress Rooney Mara for almost three years. The couple has been together since filming Mary Magdalene in 2017. They also starred together in Her (where they first met) and Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot. Phoenix and Mara made their official red carpet debut as a couple at the Cannes Film Festival’s closing ceremony in May 2017.

Since the start of their relationship, the couple has been notoriously private. However, in an interview with The New York Times, Phoenix casually revealed that he lives with Mara in the Hollywood Hills. The two enjoy meditating, relaxing with their dogs and watching Netflix documentaries—“he watched the 10-hour true-crime doc The Staircase because Mara wanted to.”

And this last May, the couple sparked rumors of a possible engagement, with Mara sporting a ring on that finger. Us Weekly initially reported that the duo will never wed, as they view marriage as “too mainstream.” But in July of 2019, the publication confirmed that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo actress and The Village star are indeed engaged to be married.

Did we mention the nickname he has for his betrothed? Filthy dragon (in reference to her previous role). Once again, we’re not kidding.
