Joaquin Phoenix Thought Rooney Mara Disliked Him When They First Met

When it came to his relationship with Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix immediately knew there was something special, whether the feeling was mutual or not.

The 44-year-old actor recently sat down for an interview with Vanity Fair and talked about meeting Mara when they starred in the 2013 film, Her. Although Phoenix originally thought that the actress didn’t like him, he soon learned that wasn’t the case, and it brought out a side of him that he didn’t know existed.

“She’s the only girl I ever looked up on the internet,” Phoenix said. “We were just friends, email friends. I’d never done that. Never looked up a girl online.”

Dating rumors first started circulating in 2017 when Phoenix and Mara attended a wellness retreat together. Four months later, the couple low-key confirmed their relationship when they made their red-carpet debut at the Cannes Film Festival.

In September 2019, Mara sparked engagement rumors when she stepped out wearing a massive ring on that finger. Although we don’t know if Phoenix actually popped the question, the actor confirmed that he’s in a good place.

“I know that I have meaning in other parts of my life,” he said, referring to his successful acting career. “And that’s really what sustains me. I enjoy it. I love my life. I f***ing love my life.”

Brava, Mara. Brava.
