Joao Felix scores as Atletico Madrid erases two-goal deficit to beat Eibar (video)
Thomas Partey’s stoppage-time winner completed Atletico Madrid’s comeback in a 3-2 win over Eibar on Sunday at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Joao Felix also scored his first competitive goal for Atleti, which found itself down two goals after 20 minutes against the La Liga bottom-dwellers.
Charles Dias de Oliveira, known as Charles, scored the first goal in the seventh minute, and left back Anaitz Arbilla doubled the lead in the 19th.
Atleti rallied and snatched an unlikely three points when Partey inadvertently flicked a Saúl Ñíguez pass with his heel, collecting the deflection before scrambling to finish the chance (via beIN Sports):
Atleti roared back to life through Diego Costa midway through the first half. The veteran striker powered down the right, shouldered Eibar defender Sergio Álvarez to the ground and played a tilt-a-whirl ball back across to the waiting Felix:
The tying goal came shortly after the break as Álvaro Tejero’s failed gamble freed Atleti fullback Renan Lodi, who played a deft ball with the outside of his left foot to Vitolo’s proximal run.
Vitolo then stabbed with the outside of his right to beat Eibar keeper Marko Dmitrović:
Atleti will sit atop La Liga heading into the international break, the only club with three wins in three to start the season.
The 19-year-old Felix was one of the signings of the summer and impressed in preseason. Now he has his first La Liga goal.
Atleti overhauled its squad this summer, and many figured they were a year away from genuine La Liga contention again. But if Barcelona continues to limp without Lionel Messi, and if Real Madrid can’t rise above its near-constant turmoil, and if Atleti keeps collecting wins, who knows what could happen come springtime?
