Joanna Gaines Has a Very Smart Cell Phone Etiquette Rule

Next time you're sitting with your kids or a stubborn husband at the dinner table as they scroll through the internet's endless plains, ask yourself: What would Joanna Gaines do?

The answer, it turns out, is simple: Put the phones away! Gaines is such an adamant believer in this that she even incorporated hanging leather pouches at each table at the couple's new Waco restaurant, Magnolia Table, so guests could stow their phones during their visit. "At our house, we keep phones away from the table at mealtimes so we can focus on each other and the conversation around the table and we wanted this to be an option for our guests at the restaurant as well," writes Gaines on her "At Home" blog for Magnolia.

To help ingrain the habit for your friends and family, you may need some help at the outset. One easy strategy? Treat yourself to a pretty storage box or bowl to help turn the process into a ritual. If the container or bowl is nice to look at, chances are, you'll want to continue to put it to good use. (We love this storage basket from Chip and Jo's Hearth and Hand with Magnolia collection for Target. You can also designate a drawer or shelf in your home for this purpose.)
