Joanna Gaines Shares a Bible Verse Following George Floyd's Murder

Following the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor—the latest in hundreds of black lives taken at the hands of police—millions of people around the world have taken to the streets to protest the racial injustice black people continue to face in the U.S. Meanwhile, many celebrities have been among those speaking out on social media—some more obliquely than others.

Yesterday, Joanna Gaines posted a video on Instagram and Twitter of a Bible verse: "Search me oh God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24."

Gaines doesn't explicitly address the racial injustice people are protesting or state "Black Lives Matter." Instead, she captions the post with an introspective prayer. "May this verse be my prayer, today and every day," she writes. "God, it starts right here in my own heart. I want to learn, and love, and support in a way that honors our black brothers and sisters—your beautiful, precious children."

Gaines also posted a black square today in support of #blackouttuesday, captioning it, "I promise to listen and learn." However, her lifestyle company, Magnolia, has yet to make a statement.

On Saturday, design stars Drew and Jonathan Scott directly addressed the injustice African Americans are facing. On Instagram, Jonathan posted a photo of a memorial for George Floyd, stating in the caption,"I know I benefit from privilege that many others do not. And it’s wrong. We are all created equal...#justiceforgeorgefloyd, #blacklivesmatter." Drew also included the same hashtags in the caption of a photo that maps out racial justice organizations people can support. "I believe that we can use this rage to fuel change and justice, peacefully. It’s hard to find words... but I have a duty to learn all that I can to help," he wrote in the caption.

Tarek El Moussa, meanwhile, took it a step further, explicitly calling for the arrest of all officers present at the time of Floyd's murder. "All the officers that witnessed this should be held accountable. They should be put in prison for the maximum term," he writes. "Real prison time and real consequences."
