Joanna Gaines Reveals the Moment She and Chip Knew Their Dreams Were Coming True

After decades of success with Fixer Upper, Chip and Joanna Gaines have just officially premiered their latest venture: Magnolia Network. But it was a long road to get here: Yesterday, the two spoke with Hoda Kotb on SiriusXM’s The Hoda Show to detail their rise to fame and the things along the way that pushed them forward.
Joanna proudly spoke how her (and Chip’s) success was heavily motivated by her mother's story of immigrating from South Korea to America.
"A couple of years ago, in 2014, when this all started happening, [Chip and I] were at this lounge area that looks over Central Park, and we took it in for a second, and we both started crying," she recalls the moment when she realized her and Chip's dreams were finally coming to life.
“We thought, if my mom who came here at 19-years-old from South Korea, would know that her daughter would one day experience the world like this...."
The moment was so impactful, in fact, that the couple decided to revisit the spot where in happened in celebration of the network launch: "So we went back there last night to just really experience that magic," she adds.
Jo continues to further explain the lengths her mother went to as a young immigrant in America with few resources and a small grasp of the English language.“[She] couldn’t get a driver’s license, didn’t know English. Riding her little bike around," says Gaines. “When I think about how much she fought for the family for all the things, the dreams, when she talks to me now, she says ‘never in a million years, would I think that I would have a daughter [who would achieve such things].'"
Gaines ends by expressing how her mother fought to make space for herself as an immigrant Asian woman in America and set the path for Jo to pursue her own passions. "Through the lens of all that she’s been through, the hardship, the fight, I think for her, I think for both of us, it’s that thing of like, Mom, you set me up well. You set me up well because of the way you fought for this, your passion, now I get to kind of live in that wake.”
