Joanna Gaines & Chip Gaines Open Up About the ‘Perspective’ That Comes With Having Five Kids 13 Years Apart

We’re used to writing about celebrity parents who are members of the Two Under Two Club. And Chip and Joanna Gaines were certainly a part of the club. Several times. But now they have a whole different demo.

The HGTV stars are mom and dad to kids Drake, 18, Ella, 17, Duke, 15, and Emmie, 13. The proud parents of four teens also share a sweet 5-year-old, Crew. Yup, five kids ranging from age 5 to 18! And that 13-year age gap is major. After all, their oldest is away at college, and their youngest is a kindergartener.

In a recent interview with Today, Joanna said she is in a “sweet season” with her teenagers. It’s a time when they are feeling more and more like her “friends.”

“The older they get, just the connection that’s there. I’m like, ‘I want to hang out with them,'” she said.

It’s an interesting phenomenon for parents. To realize that their babies are becoming young adults who are more like their peers than their kids. And that this huge change happened fast.

“Then we have this 5-year-old that just helps with perspective,” she continued. “Hold on tight. They grow up really fast.”

In 2022, she said her youngest inspired her to slow down and really enjoy her life — a life that is “moving so fast.”

“He’s like my little wisdom. I’m like, I can learn more from Crew — just the way he teaches me to live and to notice things,” she said.

The Gaines kids may have grown up in the spotlight — making appearances on Fixer Upper — but Joanna and Chip said they try to give their family a “normal” life.

“They’re so young and we want to give them the chance to have a normal childhood,” the interior designer told PEOPLE. “When we wake up in the morning, I think we’re normal. But then you go to Target and it’s definitely different. We’re both in awe.”

Because could you imagine being one of Joanna’s kids’ and seeing your mom’s Magnolia Home collection everywhere across the store?! And having adoring fans [most likely] hound her?

And Chip and Jo must be in awe shopping at Target themselves as they make their way through the entire spectrum of back-to-school supplies. Because from the little animal-themed lunch boxes to the dorm room organizers, the Gaines family needs it all!
