Jimmy Kimmel shared a health update on his son

In April, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel’s newborn son had a health scare. While things seemed fine immediately after his birth, Kimmel and his wife soon learned that the newborn, named Billy, would have to undergo open-heart surgery. The host informed his fans of the news in a touching monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and we’ve been invested ever since — not only because we care deeply about Billy’s well-being, but because Kimmel emphasized why access to health care is so important.

Kimmel noted that he was fully aware that his son was able to get quick treatment based on his insurance, but felt heartache knowing that many other families weren’t so lucky.

“No parent should ever have to decide if they can afford to save their child’s life. It just shouldn’t happen. Not here,” he said.

It’s hard to believe that time has flown so quickly, but young Billy just turned six months old, and Kimmel decided to give an update.

Showcasing his son’s smiling face and a Sophie the Giraffe, Kimmel noted that things are looking good. Since he mentioned in the earlier monologue that Billy would have a second procedure by six months, this news came as a relief.

“He is healthy and happy and we are all very grateful for your prayers, good wishes, thoughts and support of @ChildrensLA and children’s hospitals in your area,” Kimmel said.

While it’s often hard discussing children who are sick, or who undergo complications at birth, Kimmel is using his story and his platform to help make a difference in hope that every child be able to get the incredible care that Billy did.

We hope that Kimmel keeps giving us updates, because we’re so invested in the little guy.
