Jimmy Fallon canceled a taping of The Tonight Show on Friday, and now we have some very sad insight as to why. Fallon’s mother Gloria passed away on Saturday, and we’re thinking of him during this difficult time. A spokesperson for the Fallon family confirmed the news in a statement to People. His mom was surrounded by family and friends.

“Jimmy Fallon’s mother, Gloria, died peacefully on Saturday,” People reports. “Jimmy was at his mother’s bedside, along with her loved ones, when she passed away at NYU Langone Medical Center. Our prayers go out to Jimmy and his family as they go through this tough time.”

The news comes shortly after fellow late-night funnyman Jimmy Kimmel took some time off from hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live to care for his young son undergoing open-heart surgery. (In his absence, he enlisted celebrity pals to guest host, including Jennifer Lawrence, which led to this gem of an interview with Kim Kardashian.)

Though the cause of death remains unknown at this time, Gloria was 68 years old. Fallon canceled the Tonight Show taping on Friday so he could be by her side. According to Variety, he cited “a private Fallon family matter.” A source told People that she had been sick.

“Jimmy comes from a very close knit family. Together with the rest of his loved ones they are by her side right now,” the source told People at the time.

So sad. We’re heartbroken to hear about Fallon’s loss and wish him and his family well.

Based on stories Fallon shared in the past, it sounded like she was an incredible woman. He once shared that his mother was the queen of staying in touch.

Hang in there, Jimmy. We can’t wait to see you back in action soon.
