Former president Jimmy Carter, is continuing to receive hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia. Carter, who is 99, is the oldest living president in U.S. history.

In February 2023, the Carter Center announced "after a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention."

In November 2023, Jimmy's wife, Rosalynn Carter, died at age 96. In a statement, he said, "Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me." He was seen in public at her memorial service, in a wheelchair and with a blanket with Rosalynn's face covering his legs:

Since Carter entered hospice, there have been only a few updates on his health—in March, President Joe Biden revealed Carter asked him to deliver his eulogy and in May, his grandson Jason Carter said he's been enjoying ice cream and visits from family. In August, his grandson Josh Carter told People that "it's clear we're in the final chapter."

In September, Jason spoke with USA Today about Jimmy and Rosalynn, who has since passed, "They're coming to the end, as we know. He's been in hospice now for several months, but they are happy. They are together. They are at home. They're in love, and I don't think anyone gets more than that. I mean, it's a perfect situation for this time in their lives." He added that his grandfather faces "really significant physical challenges."

Earlier in August, grandson Hugo Wentzel also spoke about his grandfather. Wentzel, the son of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter's daughter Amy, was a contestant on the reality show Claim to Fame. After his elimination, he chatted with Entertainment Weekly, where he spoke about his grandfather. "It's been harder and harder to see him," Wentzel said. "My mom spends a lot of her time with him. She spends almost half her time taking care of him at this point just because of things like COVID regulations. So it's really family oriented. I haven't been seeing him as much recently, but he knows that I love him and we're supporting him through this time."

Wentzel also gave a specific health update on his grandfather, explaining, "He's pretty sick. He still does use his brain. He listens to audiobooks. He's a genius. He's super smart. I love him. He always wants to be doing something with his mind, so he's trying to keep himself busy, but he is really sick and getting older."
