Former President Jimmy Carter continues to defy the odds. Now in his seventh month of hospice care, the 98-year-old has managed to shock even those closest to him.

"These last several months have been surprising for all of us," his grandson, Jason Carter, chairman of The Carter Center, told People, "but it's been a real blessing."

With Jimmy’s 99th birthday on October 1st fast approaching, The Carter Center is cooking up something extra special for the milestone moment. As part of its "Jimmy Carter 99" campaign, they’re asking the public to share messages and well wishes to be featured in a “digital mosaic for President Carter, his family, and communities around the world to enjoy,” The Carter Center shared in a news release.

“President Carter has dedicated his life to making the world a better place, and we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to send him love and to thank him for all he has done,” Paige Alexander, chief executive officer at The Carter Center, told USA Today.

You can submit your tributes on The Carter Center website or by posting on social media the #JimmyCarter99 hashtag. Submissions will be shared with the Carter family and compiled into a digital mosaic illustrating the magnitude of President Carter's impact on people all over the world.

"When you think about his legacy, it is this legacy of all of these individual personal stories that he has helped to define," Jason explained to People. "We thought it was a really appropriate gift, and we're just thrilled that we get to give it to him."

Following a few brief hospitalizations, Jimmy announced his decision to forgo further medical intervention in February. Three months later, the Carter family revealed that 96-year-old Rosalynn, Jimmy’s wife of 77 years, has dementia.

The couple has spent the last few months visiting with friends and family at their home in Plains, Georgia, and enjoying their “final days” together.

“I think the beautiful thing is that they are still together,” Josh told People last month. "They are still holding hands. It's just amazing."
