In an interview with Fox Business on Tuesday, Jillian Michaels revealed that she was diagnosed with COVID-19 “several weeks ago” and “had no idea” she had it for six days.

“I literally let my guard down for an hour with one of my best friends who does my hair and makeup and got it,” she said. “It’s just that simple.” She added that her friend who transmitted the novel coronavirus also didn’t know she was carrying it.

Prior to the interview, Michaels hadn’t spoken about the experience publicly. “I’m fortunate to have gone into it being healthy and I was able to get on the other side of it pretty quick,” she said. “But not everybody is that lucky.”

With that, she discouraged people from going to the gym, despite the fact that many facilities have reopened across the country. “If you are afraid of COVID, you should not go to the gym,” she warned. “A public gym is probably a place where you will get it.” She continued, referring to the lack of mask-wearing in gyms, and the excess breathing and sweating: “Anticipate that you will likely get it in an environment like that.” She said she’s not a doctor, but “if you are afraid of it, by all means, it’s not a move that I would recommend making.”

Instead, she recommended working out at home. And no, you don’t need machines and equipment to do so. “You have your own bodyweight and you can use it in a million different ways, literally, to get a superior workout,” she said. Her new app, the Jillian Michaels Fitness app, offers customized workouts and meal plans in exchange for a paid subscription after a seven-day free trial.

In the interview, Jillian also discussed how the pandemic has affected her business and investments. For obvious reasons, the virtually adapted ones have done better than those with in-person operations. “[The app] business has gone up 30%,” she said. “Other businesses that I’ve invested in, whether it was a supplement business or an organic coffee company that you can only get through foot traffic in the supermarket, have taken hits.”
