American Idol guest performer and Grammy-nominated singer Jewel got a little defensive when judge Katy Perry critiqued her duet partner Hunter Metts during Monday night’s episode.

After Katy, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan narrowed down the competition to the top 24, it was time for the remaining contestants to take the stage and perform a solo and duet with one of several guest celebrity artists. For the solo round, Hunter whipped out his guitar and put a unique spin on Sia’s “Chandelier.” When it came to Hunter’s duet, he was paired up with Jewel to take on her hit “Who Will Save Your Soul.”

When the two finished up their duet, Jewel walked off and watched on a monitor backstage as Hunter received feedback from the judges. First, Luke told the singer that no matter what, he has an “undeniable sounding voice.” Next, Lionel pressed Hunter to “lean forward” and work on his confidence. Katy then added that she felt there was “a little fear” in the contestant’s eyes, a comment that Jewel clearly did not agree with.

“What?” Jewel exclaimed while watching Katy give feedback backstage. “No! I really thought he gave a lot more.”

Despite Jewel dissenting off stage, the “Roar” singer continued to stress to Hunter the importance of not comparing himself to the rest of the competition. “You have a unique voice that is only your own. So you really can’t and should not be judging yourself against them,” Katy reinforced.

Viewers watching Hunter’s performance at home had a lot to say about Hunter, Katy, and Jewel. “Jewel was so cute getting defensive for him like a stage mom. LOL,” one fan wrote on Youtube. “Whaat? I don’t feel any fear from him! Giving your own twist of [a] Sia song? Like how brave is that?” another said, reacting to Katy’s commentary. “His ‘Chandelier’ version was genius. Really wanna hear more vocal risks!” a different fan commented.

Though Katy and Jewel seem to be in a bit of disagreement over Hunter’s performance, it will ultimately come down to how the fans voted. Next Sunday night, eight of the performers seen on Monday night will advance to the top 16. Will Hunter be one of them? We’ll find out soon enough.
