Jessica Simpson Turned Down a Role in The Notebook For a Very Specific Reason
The Notebook could have been much different if Jessica Simpson had accepted an offer to appear in the film.
In her new memoir Open Book, Simpson opened up about being offered Rachel McAdams' role of Allison "Allie" Hamilton, but turning it down for one very specific reason: the sex scene between Allison and Ryan Gosling's Noah Calhoun.
"I knew exactly what the movie was about because I had read the script," Simpson wrote. She admitted that she simply passed on it because the filmmakers apparently "wouldn't budge" on taking out the sex scene.
"And it would have been with Ryan Gosling, of all people," she agonized further in her book, explaining that he had been her first crush in the '90s. The pair had initially tried out for The Mickey Mouse Club together, so we can certainly imagine how awkward it may have been for Simpson.

Though she passed on appearing in the film, the pop star did end up seeing it, however. It just happened to be at what could have been one of the worst moments ever: when an official statement had been released announcing she was separating from ex-husband Nick Lachey in 2005. The film was screened on the airplane she had been on at the time, and the entire flight would be watching it with her recent breakup announcement in mind.
"Oh God, I thought," she wrote. "The most romantic movie in the world, and I was leaving Nick. The movie was on every screen, and I was swept up into it, wishing I had that great love that would be forever."
The singer has been surprisingly frank in her memoir, divulging several details about her private life, including her experience with being sexually abused as a young girl. Despite these difficult times, however, she wrote that she's come out on the other side feeling more positive after her "deep emotional journey."
"I’ve used my pain and turned it into something that can be beautiful and hopefully inspiring to people."
