Netflix's hit series, Break Point, just dropped its second season on January 10, and tennis fans have been eagerly diving back into over the lives of the professional athletes featured in the new episodes. One episode hones in on the one and only Jessica Pegula, a 29-year-old tennis star who has a world No.1 ranking in doubles, and also happens to be the daughter of billionaires.
In fact, Jessica has been dubbed the “richest tennis player in the world,” but she’s said she would trade all her wealth to win Wimbledon.
So, who are Jessica Pegula’s parents, Terry and Kim Pegula, and how did they get so rich? Here’s everything to know.
How did Terry and Kim meet?
The couple’s love story is pretty wild. Kim told the Florida Times-Union that she was waiting tables to fund a trip to Alaska, and ran into Terry while she waited on his table. He eventually offered her a job at his natural gas company and the two started dating. They got married two years later.
How did they make their money?
Terry built up his wealth thanks to East Resources, a natural gas producer he founded in 1983, according to Bloomberg. Terry’s company acquired leases in the Marcellus and Niobrara shale formations, earning even more money in the process. Terry sold most of the company in 2010 to Royal Dutch Shell for $4.7 billion, per Bloomberg.
They own a few professional sports teams.
Terry and Kim own the NFL's Buffalo Bills and *also* the Buffalo Sabres, an NHL team. The couple bought the Sabres in 2011 for $189 million, and in 2014, outbid groups led by Donald Trump and Jon Bon Jovi to snag the Bills for $1.4 billion, according to Forbes. That's no small chunk of change.
Kim serves as president of both teams and is the first woman to be president of both an NFL and NHL team, according to CNN.
They have three kids.
Terry and Kim have three kids together: Jessica, Kelly, and Matthew. Jessica, 29, is a tennis pro, Kelly, 27, is fashion designer and singer, and Matthew, 24, is getting his master’s degree in sports management from Texas A&M University, according to LinkedIn.
Terry also has two other kids from his first marriage to Anne Shirley—Michael and Laura.
The couple currently lives in Boca Raton, Florida.
Terry and Kim have a pretty sweet home in the Palm Beach County city, according to The Real Deal. It features a 40,000 gallon pool, 10-car air-conditioned garage, and 12 acres of land.
The house features eight bedrooms and nine bathrooms, and has a stable for horses, the publication says.
Kim had a heart attack in 2022.
Jessica detailed the scary ordeal in The Players’ Tribune in 2023. She had just flown back to Florida from the French Open, where she'd made it the quarterfinals in singles and the finals in doubles, when she got a scary call in the middle of the night.
“My mom was asleep when my dad woke up to her going into cardiac arrest and she was unresponsive for quite a while,” she wrote. “My sister gave her CPR until the ambulance arrived. She saved her life. Even though she doesn’t like to take credit for this terrible situation, she absolutely saved her life, followed by the critical job performed by the paramedics who arrived and were able to restore a heartbeat.”
