Why Jessica Chastain uses Kim Kardashian's contour tutorials to get into character

Kim Kardashian has served as inspiration for countless selfie-taking fans, makeup artists, and Yeezy seasons. But now, her famous (and famously makeup-heavy) face is enhancing a performance on the big screen.

For her role as the leader of a top-tier, high-stakes poker game in Molly’s Game, Jessica Chastain channeled Kardashian and the uniquely feminine power she’s developed as an inspiration. Chastain shared her strategy in an interview with W Magazine.

“To play Molly Bloom, I thought about what women have to become in order to find power in a society where men are making all of the rules,” she said. “I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh — the Kardashians are an incredible example of women who have their own sense of entrepreneurial power.’”

Chastain even watched Kardashian’s makeup tutorials to help her understand the “ideal” woman. “For research, I actually watched Kim’s tutorial on face shading and contouring,” Chastain said. “As the movie goes on, Molly transforms into this idea of what a woman has to be in order to be heard: The heels get higher, the necklines are lower, the hair is longer. It was quite a departure for me, physically.”

Aside from helping her disappear into the character of Molly Bloom, the physical shifts even carried over into Chastain’s own life. “The strange thing is, I don’t look like myself at all in this film, and so many people have said to me that I’ve never looked better,” she said.

We all know the typical arguments that Kardashian detractors like to lean on: the family got their start due to a sex tape, they’re raising their children on television, they have no “real” talents. But with Kylie Jenner fronting a billion-dollar company and Kim Kardashian’s recent fragrance launch netting $10 million in one day, the Kardashians’ power and stamp on modern femininity can’t be written off so easily.
