Jessica Chastain opened up about the reality of working with people you care about, namely her dear pal Oscar Isaac, admitting that sometimes, work can get in the way of your relationship.

While speaking with Vanity Fair for a feature published on Tuesday, Aug. 1, Chastain told reporters that after the two filmed Scenes From a Marriage, she needed to take a break from her 44-year-old co-star, whom she's known personally for over two decades.

"I mean, Scenes From a Marriage was very tough. And I love Oscar, but the reality is, our friendship has never quite been the same," Chastain revealed. "We’re going to be OK, but after that, I was like, I need a little bit of a breather."

The 46-year-old movie star explained that it was mainly the nature of the TV mini-series and its subject matter, "which re-examines the original's iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple," that made her want to distance herself from Isaac.

"There was so much I love you, I hate you in that series," she said. "But there’s so much joy in what I get to do. There’s a lot of catharsis. I feel like I have the best job in the world because I get to have these experiences. They’re so out of this world and feel like they’re mine."

As she continued, she reflected on her "very quiet life" when not in the spotlight, adding, "I don’t have to have these tortured things in my life. I play them and I experience them, and then I come home and I live quietly and peacefully."

Chastain and Isaac reportedly met over 20 years ago while both students at Juilliard. Prior to filming the 2021 TV mini-series, the two worked together in the 2014 crime drama film A Most Violent Year.
