It’s giving Spice Girls.

It’s another dreary September day in New York City (frown face). It’s forecast to rain most of the day with no sunshine in sight, and considering I get easily impacted by the weather, my mood definitely is taking a hit. But, as I sit on my couch in cozy clothes with a cup of earl gray tea in hand, I’ve spotted a light (err, sunshine) at the end of the (rainy day) tunnel in the form of Jessica Chastain’s latest outfit. It’s the dose of vitamin D I really needed today — not to mention it also introduced the coolest sneaker trend of the season. Mark my words.

Chastain’s outfit, which she wore for the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain, was hard to miss. The actress went with a lemon-yellow suit set that was anything but boring. The cheery, citrusy hue certainly played a big role in elevating a traditionally stuffy combo (ugh, blazer and trousers, amiright?), but the silhouettes were also top-notch. The pants weren’t your average trousers; instead, they featured a wide-leg, cropped silhouette that gave them a cooler, nonchalant look even trouser-haters could get on board with. The blazer, which she unbuttoned to reveal a white tee in support of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike, had large yellow buttons and bold padded shoulders that gave it a retro feel.

Nevertheless, that suit was obviously a standout, and thanks to the cropped pants, her unexpected shoes were on full display. We know that suits plus sneakers is an easygoing combo so many celebs have been wearing, but Chastain took the pairing up (a few inches) with platform Celine high-tops that were the definition of cool — seriously, look up “cool” in the dictionary and there would be an image of her shoes included.

Chastain’s sneakers certainly still fall into the tried-and-true white sneaker territory — you know, the ones you reach for when you don’t know what else to wear (they’re my saving grace when I don’t want to deal with anything else). White trainers are comfy, cool, and versatile, and the actress’ pair has all that, plus more — about 4-inches more, to be exact. Her designer pair, which could easily be plucked from the Spice Girls’ wardrobe, featured a platform sole that lifted her and her outfit up. Unlike flat soles, a chunky one is much cooler, in that a thicker base adds some drama and a little bit of clunk. I’ll take some of that, please.

All that to say, whether you’re wearing jeans, trousers, a skirt, or dress, platform sneakers are certain to take the look to new heights. Plus, they’re just as versatile as a regular pair of kicks, but with a few inches of support. Shop chunky white sneakers from Steve Madden, Vince, and Sorel, below.
