Jeremy Pope Brings the Drama to the 2023 Met Gala With a 30-Foot Karl Kape

Year after year, designers bring their most creative — and dramatic — looks to the Met Gala. The 2023 Karl Lagerfeld-themed event was no different, with tons of archival fashion and Choupette cosplay on the red carpet. There were many different sources to pull inspiration from, but nothing conveys "in honor of Karl" quite like... well, Karl's face. So, Jeremy Pope and Balmain's Olivier Rousteing did just that, honoring the designer with a look centered around a cape with an over-30-feet-long cape bearing Lagerfeld's likeness.

According to the brand, the cape — which features a hand-drawn illustration of the late German designer —  was made with "over 5,000 meters of silk chiffon" and 70 seamstresses working on it. Pope, who was styled by Ugo Mozie, completed the look with simple black flared trousers, also from Balmain.

Pope was accompanied by Rousteing, who wore an understated (but sharp-shouldered) black suit and carried a tote bag that read "Karl Who?," similar to one that the late designer carried on several occasions back in 2009, according to British Vogue.
