  • The late TV legend Leonard Nimoy's 92nd birthday led to an outpouring of posts and other tributes.

  • One such post was from actress Mayim Bialik, who showcased a pendant that had been gifted to her by Nimoy's daughter.

  • The pendant had previously been in outer space, aboard the Blue Origin.

The late Leonard Nimoy was much more than just Star Trek's iconic Spock. He was a filmmaker, an author, and a celebrated photographer. Heck, in 1968, he even released a song and music video about Bilbo Baggins and the story of The Hobbit.

But, as most people who have worked with him would agree, perhaps Nimoy's most enduring legacy was his friendship. Whether it's his longtime Star Trek castmates or those who only worked with Nimoy for brief cameos, like his classic appearance on The Simpsons, it's clear that Nimoy's kindness had an impact on virtually everyone with whom he crossed paths.

One such person is actress and Jeopardy! host Mayim Bialik. Many will recall Bialik's work on the hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory, on which she played a guest role in the show's third season, before joining the core cast in seasons four through 12. By the time Bialik joined the show, the concept of Leonard Nimoy had already become a recurring gag on the program. While the real Nimoy was famously friendly, the in-universe Nimoy had apparently taken out a restraining order on the central character of Sheldon. It seems in the world of The Big Bang Theory, Nimoy just liked to eat and be left alone, just like a little hobbit named Bilbo Baggins.

In Big Bang's fifth season episode "The Transporter Malfunction," Nimoy actually appeared in a voice cameo—not as himself, but rather, as a talking Spock action figure. The cast all seemed thrilled to have Nimoy on set, and as Mayim Bialik's latest Instagram post indicates, his impact on their lives still endures.

"In honor of Leonard Nimoy's 92nd Birthday today, I'm proud to be wearing the LLAP Pendant which was given to me by his daughter and son-in-law, Julie Nimoy and David Knight," Bialik wrote in the caption to her post. She continued:

"The pendant is very special to his family not only because the LLAP symbol was so loved by Leonard but it's the same pendant that was on-board Blue Origin's space flight last year commemorating his legacy and his lasting wish for peace, tolerance and unity in the future! Happy Birthday Leonard!"

The "LLAP" in the post stands for "live long and prosper," the catchphrase of the character Nimoy played on Star Trek. But over time, the phrase also became something of a mantra for the actor and artist who was, in many ways, also a humanitarian. Nimoy advocated for peace and understanding whenever possible. Fittingly, his final statement on social media before his passing was a tweet that read, "A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP."

Like Bialik's post, there's many ways to honor the legacy of Leonard Nimoy. Watch one of the many films he directed, like Three Men and a Baby or Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Read one of his memoirs, like I Am Not Spock, or its sequel, I Am Spock. Or perhaps, and just hear us out here, rock out to a little tune about a little hobbit named Bilbo Baggins.
