What a journey it’s been for Jeopardy! champion Matt Amodio. During his time on the beloved game show, he’s achieved incredible milestones. But folks are wondering if his run is finally coming to an end … or if he’s just have a good laugh.

It all began on Tuesday when the computer science PhD student from New Haven, Connecticut was celebrating on Twitter after winning 30 consecutive games. The accomplishment was on the heels of a different victory — passing the $1 million mark a few days before — and Matt was overcome with emotion. “Wow, 30 wins. I know whatever happens next, this has been the ride of a lifetime on #Jeopardy,” he wrote. “Thanks to all of you for tuning in for all of the ups and downs!”

Upon reading his heartfelt words though, Jeopardy! fans immediately began speculating if Matt was trying to tell them that he was about to lose. “Oh, gosh, I hope this isn't you hinting that you've lost! Getting bad vibes from the ‘has been.’ Keep on ridin Matt @AmodioMatt!” one person tweeted.

But the next day, on Wednesday, he continued his streak after winning his 31st game. Still, Matt took to Twitter again to share more candid thoughts, seemingly reflecting on how far he’s come. “I'm proud of my run on #Jeopardy, but the thing I may be proudest of is being the reason so many people learn what the rules of #Jeopardy are,” he wrote, referencing his strategy of answering all subjects with “what is.”

What’s more, the 30-year-old Jeopardy! star, followed it up with another message about Jeopardy! prodigy James Holzhauser. Recently, the two exchanged back-and-forth tweets after James compared his 23-day total earnings to Matt’s. Although by this point in the competition, James had about $1 million more than Matt, James ended his time on Jeopardy! with 32 consecutive games won. And on Thursday night’s episode, Matt is set to try to tie James and perhaps, even surpass him completely in this category.

In contrast to his previous tweets poking fun at James, Matt decided to take a different approach. “Tomorrow on #Jeopardy I have the chance to remind everybody how much better than me @James_Holzhauer is in literally every way,” he tweeted. “It would be an honor to be unfavorably compared to a person I admire so much!”

Right on cue, Jeopardy! fans swarmed the comments section with several takes on what Matt what was trying to convey. Some thought he was insinuating that he was going to fall short of James’ record and others believed he was cracking a subtle joke about him. “Omg! I hope this doesn’t mean you lose tonight 😢😢😢😢😢,” a fan said. “Wait! What?? This doesn’t mean what I think it might mean, does it?” another added. “Why does nobody see the (polite) sarcasm in this tweet?” a viewer commented. “Brutal. Officially the shade champion of Jeopardy. Keep on winning,” someone else quipped.

That said, Matt has teased fans before about whether or not he would be back for another Jeopardy! game. But there's only one way to find out for sure. So, you know where to find us tonight — in front of the TV at 7 p.m. on the dot.
