Fox Sports announcer Joe Buck has many Jeopardy! viewers talking.

On Monday, the NFL and MLB commentator made his Jeopardy! debut, an opportunity he now considers to be “a career highlight.” The 52-year-old Florida native is one of many guest hosts over the past few months who've had the opportunity to try out for the permanent hosting position following the death of longtime host Alex Trebek last November.

Ahead of Joe's first episode airing, the commentator reflected on what Jeopardy! means to him personally. “Now, that I’ve been inside the studio, I have an even greater appreciation for how meticulously awesome Alex Trebek was,” he said in an exclusive interview with the show. “I was just a fan. But now to be on the inside of it, see how it works, see the intensity of the game, I will go home with a newfound appreciation for something I already appreciated.”

After watching Joe host Jeopardy! for the first time, some folks immediately took to Twitter to cheer him on. “#JoeBuck is an awesome #jeopardy host! He's killing it!” one person wrote. “Wow! Joe came out strong,” another added. “Joe Buck was amazing tonight! Nice touches of humor throughout and very clear and easy to understand,” a different fan said.

That said, there were others who made it clear that Joe isn't exactly their favorite, including Jeopardy! champ James Holzhauer himself. "Jeopardy says whoever hosts full time will have to quit their other job, so I’m crossing my fingers it’s Joe Buck," James tweeted.

Even still, a handful threw their support behind Joe to become the new permanent host of Jeopardy!. But rumor has it executive producer Mike Richards is getting the coveted job while Mayim Bialik will host primetime and spinoff specials (though nothing is confirmed yet). Most recently, Mike addressed a Variety report that made it sound like he is the frontrunner.

“It is true that I was asked if I would consider hosting the show,” he wrote in an internal memo to Jeopardy! staff, per TVLine. “I was humbled and deeply honored. No final decisions have been made and discussions with me and other potential hosts are still ongoing.”

Joe is the last guest host to appear in season 37, which will officially wrap up on Friday. According to Mike, whoever is officially named the new permanent host of Jeopardy! will begin taping new episodes this summer. Season 38 is expected to premiere in mid-September.
