Jeopardy is causing some serious debate amongst its most loyal viewers.

During a recent episode, the Final Jeopardy prompt left quite a few people scratching their heads. Let’s go through this together.

The category? Oscar-winning films. The question? “The first words spoken in this 1970 Best Picture Oscar winner are ‘Ten-Hut! Be seated.’”

The correct answer is Patton, according to the show. But...how can that be when Midnight Cowboy won Best Picture in 1970? It’s right here on the Academy Awards website! Fans did not miss a beat, quickly calling out Jeopardy’s supposed mistake.

Here’s where things get tricky though. It’s true that Patton won in 1971, but it was actually made in 1970, according to IMDb. Meaning that the question was referencing the year it debuted and that it took home the trophy eventually, not necessarily in the year 1970. Both the contestants and other viewers seemed able to distinguish that too.

Jennifer Quail, who appeared on this episode, even took to Twitter to comment on the confusion. “Is this one of those ‘year it came out versus year the ceremony is held things’? I have no idea, I bet low because as a general rule, I will only start caring about Oscars if I’m nominated in one.”

Her risk paid off, considering she won with her answer of Patton. She also diffused the fan fury with a lighthearted response.

“Okay, y’all: Patton was released in 1970, was awarded Best Picture in 1971. Debating the year is like caring whether Annie Hall is best picture of ’77 or ’78 when we ALL know the important fact is #StarWars was robbed,” she joked.

Who could argue with that?!
