Jennings Downtown district rich in history with general store museum
JENNINGS, La. (KLFY) – If you’re a local, chances are you’ve either heard of or visited the W.H. Tupper General Store Museum.
The W.H. Tupper General Store Museum is located in the heart of the Downtown district and has been attracting tourists, students and locals since its opening in 1991. The historic downtown district in Jennings is home to numerous businesses and historic landmarks. “We were in the middle of re-doing downtown and the mayor ran with the idea,” says Kayla Gary.
‘Turn It Up Tuesday’ history almost a decade in the making
The museum showcases antique items that were once sold in general stores from past eras. “Tools, food, clothes, anything you would find at a hardware store today. We have thousands and thousands of items.”
Although the items are not for sale, Gary mentions visitors of all ages leave the museum with a profound sense of connection to the past. ”It’s an anchor for people. It just brings back memories for people and then you have all of these cute little shops and it’s just so much fun.”
Since 1991, the museum has successfully weathered the changes in the downtown area.
