Jennifer Lopez Just Wore a Rare Bold Lip

In fall's hottest color.

We all know Jennifer Lopez's signature is a glossy nude lip. She’s worn the soft color nearly every time we've see her for over a decade. She wore it on the runway when she walked for Versace in an update to her iconic green dress, when she invented the matching “Rich Girl Nude” manicure, and while on the Grammys red carpet. So, it goes without saying that every time she parts with her go-to lip, we can’t take our eyes off it.

On October 13, that's exactly what happened. While attending a Neiman Marcus x Schiaparelli event with the fashion house’s creative director, Daniel Roseberry, the triple threat paired a very on-brand outfit with the brightest pop of a red lip.

The outfit was full Schiaparelli, from head-to-toe. J. Lo's eyes were covered in their avant-garde gold “sunglasses” that forced her to look out of eye-shaped cutouts. Her statement earrings had a matching eyeball theme. JLo’s dress was the same color as the lipstick we're used to seeing on her—a tan silk dress that looked like sculpted marble. The waist of the gown was cinched with a gold pin reminiscent of her glasses and earrings. She finished off the look by accessorizing with a white clutch, black shawl, gold jewelry, and bold makeup.

Her eye makeup, when not hidden behind those glasses, didn’t do too much as not to distract from her ultra-rare red lip. Her skin complimented the shiny red lips with a hydrated glow, and her cheeks were sculpted with bronzer and a light red blush. The finishing touches were a coat of mascara, some highlighter in the inner corners of her eyes, and, as mentioned, her super-glossy lips.

Though she historically isn’t one to sport the ruby color, it does make sense why Lopez would try it out now, as the color has never been more on trend and was even a featured hue in Schiaparelli’s latest collection.

Red is trending for a few reasons. There was Rihanna’s iconic Superbowl performance where she wore a red jumpsuit to reveal her pregnancy with baby number two. Of course, there was TikTok's “Tomato Girl Summer,” which quickly gave way to Strawberry Girl makeup. There's also the ongoing grunge revival which favors edgy shades like scarlet and oxblood, and blood red was all over the runways at fashion weeks worldwide. We’ve seen “cherry cola” hair find its way to Zendaya, Dua Lipa, and Cardi B. “Cherry Mocha” nails have taken over TikTok, plus Taylor Swift’s never-ending obsession with red lipstick has kept it front of mind.

However, plain and simply: “Scarlet is a power move—it’s so forceful,” luxury fashion expert and stylist Jessie Frances previously told Byrdie. “You cannot deny the power of a red lip throughout time because red means business.” And business J. Lo surely meant.
