Couture Week is a spring of sartorial creativity that celebrities, designers, and front-row insiders all gather round to drink from. The dress code? Go big or go home. Naturally, it makes sense that Jennifer Lopez fits in so well.

Lopez doesn’t do small. We’re talking about the same woman who [checks notes] created an entire J.Lo cinematic universe as a testament to her love for Ben Affleck, sang “Let’s Get Loud” for President Joe Biden’s inauguration, and probably owns as many Swarovski crystal bling cups as she does Hermès Birkin bags.

She is also a typical front-row fixture at Fashion Month, and finally made her long-awaited return to the haute couture scene this Monday for Schiaparelli’s Spring/Summer 2024 show. In Schiaparelli fashion, she arrived at the venue looking like a piece of art that had jumped off the wall of the Louvre and decided to join in on the festivities.

Her shaggy white coat was actually made out of “7,000 real rose petals kept fresh and alive by sugar water,” she later revealed on Instagram. Schiaparelli’s signature motifs recurred throughout the ensemble, too, from the keyhole-shaped pendants adorning the toes of her pumps to the surrealist gold-frame sunglasses that shielded her eyes from hordes of paparazzi.

If you’re thinking that J.Lo is dressed like the main character, that’s because she is the main character—of her own movie.

Lest we forget, her fantastical curation of couture looks happens to overlap with the recent news of her latest (and also fantastical) project, an album/film dubbed This Is Me … Now: A Love Story. “We captured me at this moment in time when I was reunited with the love of my life, and we decided we were going to be together forever,” she explained in 2022. “The whole message of the album, then, is: This love exists. This is a real love.”

For the uninitiated, the This Is Me … Now movie has been billed as a “genre-redefining immersive cinematic experience,” its contents being mined straight “from the heart, soul, and dreams of Jennifer Lopez.” The trailer showcases a hodgepodge of ideas—part self-serious rom-com, part steampunk musical, part Lifetime thriller, it doesn’t respect self-imposed creative limitations, much like J.Lo herself. (And if that’s not enough, expect cameos by celebrities from Fat Joe and Keke Palmer to Post Malone, Sofía Vergara, and of course—the Dunkin’ ambassador himself—Ben Affleck.)

In a way, Couture Week doubles as Lopez’s This Is Me … Now promo tour, with her wondrously extravagant style keeping us eagerly anticipating what’s to come next.

’At yesterdays Elie Saab show, we can easily imagine Lopez’s ethereal mossy-green gown and cape of purple and olive feather boas as the outfit she wears during a wistful fairy-tale musical number. And her look at the Valentino show, which featured bows on bows on bows, is clearly the ensemble she’d wear during a reunion of star-crossed lovers at the film’s climax.

Even Lopez’s off-duty looks demanded to be paid attention to. On one occasion, she stepped out of her Paris hotel in bright white cargo pants, a creamy fur jacket with caramel highlights, and an array of ’00s-esque accessories (including diamond-encrusted hoop earrings and oversize amber-tinted shades). It was as if she were reminding us she’s still Jenny From the Block—but, probably even better.
