Jennifer Lopez Explains Why She and Alex Rodriguez Are Taking Time With Wedding Planning

For a megastar who is constantly pushing herself to be better, build bigger and go harder, Jennifer Lopez is surprisingly lax when it comes to her wedding plans with fiancé Alex Rodriguez—but for good reason. The Hollywood star has enjoyed a blockbuster busy year, what with the buzzworthy release of her crime drama Hustlers last fall and a headline-making Superbowl Half Time show performance in early 2020, and through it all, it’s been her relationship with Rodriguez that has kept her grounded in the best way possible.

Asked by Oprah Winfrey recently whether or not she feels pressure to start wedding planning, Lopez replied in the negative.

“I said, ‘If we’re going to be together for the rest of our lives, what is the rush?’” Lopez told Winfrey during an interview for the media mogul’s 2020 Vision: Your Life In Focus Tour. “If that’s what we’re really going to do, if we’re really going to be partners, if we’re really going to try to build something together that we both never had or never felt like we had, which is a family with a husband and a wife, and a mother and father, and we embrace all our children. We show them it’s something that we didn’t have.”

Lopez and Rodriguez got engaged last March while on a romantic getaway to the Bahamas, and have been blissfully enjoying the process of planning ever since. The pair first started dating back in 2017, and have made sure to intentionally fuse their two families together ever since. (Lopez shares 12-year-old twins Emme and Max with her ex-husband, Marc Anthony, and Rodriguez shares two daughters, Natasha, 15, and Ella, 11, with his ex-wife, Cynthia Scurtis.)

“For them both, they are still all about their family with the four kids,” a source previously told People of Lopez and Rodriguez’s unwavering focus on family. “Their initial strong attraction for each other would have quickly faded if they had not been able to come together as a family.”

On Saturday, Lopez admitted to Oprah that initially, she got into wedding planning mode as soon as Rodriguez had popped the question; it was Rodriguez’s thoughtful approach to the engagement, though, that reminded her to slow down.

“It’s so funny because when we first got engaged, I was like, ‘Oh, we’re going to get married in a couple of months,’” she said. “Like, your old thinking comes right back, like all that hopeless romantic [stuff] that made me get married three times. [It all] came rushing back and then I was like, ‘Wait, if we’re going to be together for the rest of it’ [and] he’s like, ‘Whatever you want to do, we can talk about it.’”

Lopez went on to gush about Rodriguez and tell the talk show host about how she knew that Rodriguez was going to be her partner for life.

“It was different than anything I had ever experienced in the sense of his consistency,” she said. “What he says, he does every time. And he also wants to build together, which I’ve never had. I’ve never had, you know, somebody who wants to see me shine and grow and be.”

This isn’t the first time that Lopez has praised Rodriguez for his supportiveness (far from it; the singer-actress is effusive in her love for her man).

“We just complement each other,” she said on the Today show last May. “We both have a lot of respect and admiration for each other. And he helps me. He helps me where I’m weak and I help him where he’s weak and he makes me stronger and that’s what it is.”

Last May, Lopez told Today show host Savannah Guthrie that she always knew that she would marry Rodriguez even before he proposed. “I always planned to get married again,” she said at the time. “I wanted to spend my life with somebody. I want to grow old with somebody. I think that’s the goal, right? To find a partner to kind of walk through this crazy thing with.” A source told People at the time that the couple are “not doing a huge wedding,” but are instead focusing on a more intimate family affair.

Lopez was previously married to Anthony from 2004 to 2014, and before that, to dancer Chris Judd from 2001 to 2003. Her first marriage was to actor Ojani Noa, from 1997 to 1998. Rodriguez was married to Scurtis from 2002 to 2008.
