After going very public with his relationship with Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson, Common appeared on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” to answer the age-hold question of whether someone can really be friends with an ex.

The rapper was there to promote his new wellness book — “And Then We Rise,” which drops this week—and the topic of exes came up during a game of “Finding Common Ground.” The GRAMMY, Oscar and Emmy winner, who has been linked to stars including Erykah Badu, Serena Williams and Tiffany Haddish, told Clarkson that just because people can’t be lovers doesn’t mean they can’t be friends.

When Common parted ways with Haddish, she famously said it “wasn’t mutual. She also said, “(It was) the healthiest, the funnest relationship I’ve ever had.”

However, Clarkson, who finalized her divorce from ex-husband Brandon Blackstock in 2022 after seven years of marriage, had other feelings about being friendly with exes. She made it clear that she prefers to leave the past in the past.

“I just feel like it can get awkward for — it depends on who ended it, or who it is. It’s situational, but mostly no. I feel like that’s awkward,” she said.
