Jennifer Grey Is Bringing Us More Dirty Dancing
The Dirty Dancing Writer Is Drafting Out a Sequel to the Iconic Film
Dirty Dancing turned 30 years old today and while the iconic film was set in 1963, some of the movie’s themes are feeling all too familiar in the current political climate.
Jennifer Grey is going to take Dirty Dancing fans for one more round on the dance floor. According to Deadline, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed that Grey would be starring in and executive producing a brand-new Dirty Dancing film, calling the news "one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood." Deadline previously reported that the project was in the works back in July.
Jonathan Levine, the director of Warm Bodies, is also attached to the project (which, aside from confirming rumors, was the only new information reported today).

Dirty Dancing premiered back in 1987, with Grey starring opposite Patrick Swayze. It pulled in $218 million at the global box office and won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for the song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" by Frank Previte, John DeNicola, and Donald Markowitz. The film also earned critical acclaim for both Swayze and Grey, who were nominated for Golden Globes for their respective performances. Die-hard fans will recall a 2004 sequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights which starred Diego Luna, Romola Garai, January Jones, John Slattery, and Sela Ward and grossed $28M worldwide. The film was actually based on a play written by Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! host Peter Sagal and didn't feature Grey, but did have a cameo from Swayze, who appeared as an unnamed dance instructor.
Dirty Dancing also had a made-for-TV remake back in 2017, with Abigail Breslin playing Grey's role of Baby and Colt Prattes playing Swayze's Johnny Castle.

Though plot points for the new film are scarce at the moment, with no words on whether or not Grey would be playing Baby again or if that famous lift would make an appearance, Feltheimer promised fans plenty of nostalgia and romance.
"It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company's history," he said.
Dirty Dancing was the very first film to sell over one million copies on home video. Grey most recently appeared on The Conners and Grey’s Anatomy, as well as having an appearance on David Milch's John From Cincinnati.
