  • Jennifer Garner, 50, got real about injectable use and cosmetic procedures in a new interview.

  • She urged younger generations to be “cautious” about “injecting anything into your face.”

  • “Don’t think that you’re 37 and you need to be shooting up your face,” she said.

From the actress who wants to “normalize looking normal,” it comes as no surprise that Jennifer Garner is urging younger generations (including her daughters) not to overindulge in cosmetic procedures. In a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the 50-year-old shared her most powerful piece of beauty advice, and it’s not to use retinol or wear more sunscren, it’s: “Look at the mirror less and be cautious when it comes to injecting anything into your face.”

This advice is especially relevant amid the ongoing Botox boom, which can be largely attributed to hours of reflection-facing Zoom meetings over the last two years, according to recent research from the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology. And although a medical spa trip may seem like a quick fix for every insecurity, Garner knows it can be a slippery slope, which is why she’s steadfast in her skepticism.

“We all look at our faces more than people used to, and it doesn’t do you any good. You obsess over changes or how to fix something on your face,” she explained. “Be very, very incredibly judicious and wait as absolutely long as possible to add anything. Don’t think that you’re 37 and you need to be shooting up your face. You don’t need to wear so much makeup or have such a constant blowout.”

This wisdom aligns closely with her more general, overall beauty philosophy, which is: “Look in the mirror less, obsess less, and look at the rest of the world to see what you could be using your time for instead.”

The star has elaborated on this mindset in plenty of other interviews, and it’s one that was passed down by her mom. “She said as you get older, the temptation is to stare into the mirror and focus on what’s changing, and here’s the secret: Don’t look!” she told Glamour last year. “Just care less, be grateful that you’re getting older, and use the time you have to be leaving the world a little bit better instead of staring at yourself in the mirror and worrying.”

Of course, Garner understands that’s easier said than done, and on days when those feelings are hard to shake, she suggests channeling them into self-care. “Turn around, pivot in that spot, and go do something nice for someone else,” she told Today in December. “Or go work out, or just take that and make it active instead of letting it just fester in you.”
