Jennifer Aniston Talks Aging, Social Media, and Short Hair

We chatted with Jennifer Aniston about her new campaign with Aveeno, along with aging, social media, and past (bad) haircuts.

Allow me to preface this by saying I never imagined talking to Jennifer Aniston would be so — so fucking cool. Who am I kidding? It's Jennifer Aniston, for God's sake — of course getting the chance to hop on the phone with her for 10 minutes — hell, even one minute — is a BFD. So when Aveeno, the skin-care brand known for its soothing, colloidal oatmeal–based moisturizers and lotions, reached out about chatting with the actress best known for igniting my love of layers, sleeveless turtlenecks, and nude lipstick, I practically jumped (leaped is more like it) at the opportunity.

So, on a typical sticky, humid New York City summer day (aka yesterday), I booked a conference room at Allure headquarters and waited for Jen to call. Ten minutes behind schedule, she did. And we talked — for 11 minutes and 30 seconds — about everything, like her new #MomentForMe campaign with Aveeno (she's the brand's global brand ambassador, FYI), which urges others to take a breather to "reset and recharge"; her not-so-secret use of social media; and why you'll never see her sport a bob.

On taking a moment to chill:

"It should be one of our number-one priorities to take care of our inner minds, souls, and bodies, because it helps us prepare for the day that we’re about to embark upon. For me, it's meditation, exercise, a Sunday spa day where I will do a facial [mask] and a scrub. The new [[Positively Radiant Overnight Hydrating Facial](http://www.aveeno.com/product/aveeno+positively+radiant+overnight+hydrating+face.do)] from Aveeno is actually one of my favorites because you leave it on overnight, which is so nice for your skin. It just sets the tone for the week."

On (secretly) using social media:

"I don't have any of it! My husband does. Justin will say, 'Did you see so-and-so's Instagram?' and I can go find it, if I want to see it. And sometimes I do. My girlfriend will send me furniture because I'm a design junkie, which is my other love. If I actually added social media to my list of things to do, I wouldn't be okay. [Laughs] I see how it really takes up people's time and just making a single post feels so … it takes forever. It's already hard enough to get through life as a teenager, and now you have things to go to find out if someone liked you or not. Oh, God! It's like self-inflicted insecurity."

On the taking the "anti" out of anti-aging:

"'Anti-aging,' I just don't think it's the right word. It's more about keeping your skin healthy. We should be anti-bullying, antiracism, anti all of that stuff, but I think anti-aging — we all are aging. It's natural, it's what happens. It's about aging beautifully and just being very taking good care of our skin. We can all preserve the youthful glow of our skin with hydration, proper skin-care treatments, with natural products. Nothing like crazy lotions and potions filled with lots of chemicals. That's why I love Aveeno, because everything is so natural and pure. ["Anti-aging"] has such a negative spin on it. But, boy, does it suck people in!"

On the one hairstyle you'll never see her sport:

"I've never liked the bob. I always want them, and then when I get them, I'm like, 'What? Why did you let me do it?' Because my hair is so curly — I have naturally wavy hair — when it's short, it just turns into an Afro I can't really control. I just don't know how to style it very well. So hence me having to say [to my hairstylist], 'Chris, please come help me with my hair.'"

On beauty trends she wishes would never make a comeback:

No surprise here — it's [the Rachel.] "No…. That's not coming back. What I wish would come back: coffeehouses. People going to coffeehouses. Friends just going to just chat and have conversations. That, I miss." [Ed. note: Sounds the plot line to a very familiar '90s sitcom, no?]

Speaking of Friends, in reference to that recent Rachel and Joey endgame Twitter thread...:

"That was some speculation.… We all thought [they'd end up together]. Well, they did sort of end up together, and then they didn't. It just—it just wouldn't work." [Laughs]
