Jennifer Aniston Says the Friends Cast Is Working on Something Together

Jennifer Aniston caused a minor social media uproar this month when she finally got on Instagram, a long-awaited move she used as an opportunity to make Friends fans nostalgic, with a selfie of her and the other five cast members.

Now, Aniston has told Ellen DeGeneres that she and the rest of the Friends cast might have a secret project in the works together. “Listen, we would love for there to be something, but we don’t know what that something is. So, we’re just trying. We’re working on something,” Aniston said. Don’t get too excited just yet, though, because in the same interview, Aniston confirmed the project in question would not be a revival. (In other words, we’re just going to have to live with Joey being the only spinoff in the Friends extended universe, as painful as that might be.)

The question remains, though: What is the cast of Friends working on together, if not a full reboot? See our best guesses below.

  • A new season of The Comeback. Lisa Kudrow’s HBO series about Valerie Cherish, an aging sitcom queen, attempting to claw her way back into America’s hearts was one of the great gifts of the mid-aughts; we’d be eternally grateful for a super-meta new season that stars the Friends cast as her cohort of has-beens.

  • A gritty action drama. They wouldn’t be the first sitcom actors to pivot to action-adventure thrillers.

  • A very relevant theater production. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and Matthew Perry in an adaptation of Luigi Pirandello’s 1921 absurdist play Six Characters in Search of an Author? Magic.

  • A celebrity book club. They’re all the rage on Instagram, after all. Why should Reese Witherspoon (who appeared on Friends as Rachel’s sister) have all the fun?

  • A series of TikToks to promote Friends reruns on Netflix. Gotta get that youth engagement somehow!
