Jennifer Aniston Put Out a Fire at the 2020 Emmys—and Twitter Had Mixed Feelings

Jennifer Aniston definitely made an impression at the Emmy Awards this year. The 2020 Emmys are obviously a little odd this year, with all the nominees at home and Jimmy Kimmel is performing as host to an audience of cardboard cutouts…except for Aniston. 

The Morning Show actor helped Kimmel present the first award of the night where they marked the occasion by, um, disinfecting the envelope to an inch of its life. You know, to really hammer home that the awards show is taking place in the midst of a global pandemic, in case those of us at home forgot. 

“That's a little extreme, Jimmy,” Aniston noted as he sprayed the disinfectant, to which he replied, “You never know where the accountant's hands have been.”

The joke was pretty benign (if a little insensitive) until Kimmel decided to take things a little further by straight-up setting the envelope on fire for good measure while Aniston struggled with the extinguisher. 

So, here's the thing. Not only are COVID-19 jokes a little tasteless during an awards show where A-list celebs don thousands of dollars worth of evening wear and jewels in their own living rooms to accept awards (which I love, don't get me wrong), it's definitely pushing it a bit to start setting things on fire as devastating wildfires ravage the West Coast. 

Don't take it from me, ask the Internet! “I can't believe they're making light of all the people that have died from covid,” one user wrote, while another implored, “PLEASE DO NOT START FIRES IN LA thankyousomuch.”

Of course, some were just happy to see 2020 portrayed so succinctly.

It was a quick moment, with Jennifer Aniston realizing quickly that she would need to be home in order to receive her Emmy, should she win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for The Morning Show, but it definitely made an impact!

So was it insensitive or a perfect metaphor? Either way, we're clearly in for a wild night.
