Motherhood is a huge decision, and one that is tricky. If you aren’t ready for kids now but you might want them in the future, what do you do? Jennette McCurdy is struggling with this very thing, which is why she has been thinking about freezing her eggs.

On her podcast, Hard Feelings, the 31-year-old told listeners that she doesn’t want kids. “I do not feel in any way, shape, or form like I want kids. I cannot imagine a world in which someday I want kids,” she said, per Entertainment Tonight.

However, with that being said, the iCarly alum shared that she doesn’t want to completely nix the possibility that she might change her mind. “I am also open to my mind changing. I have changed a lot as a person in my years so far and I hope to continue changing,” she continued. “What I don’t want to happen is for me to turn 40 and realize, ‘F**k, I want kids now,’ and I don’t have enough eggs to make it happen.”

That is so hard! The biological clock is real, and it does put a certain pressure on women to make a decision regarding motherhood sooner rather than later. That’s why egg freezing is a great option — it preserves your eggs now so you can one day use them to conceive a baby. In fact, many celebrities have done it!

Also in the podcast, the I’m Glad My Mom Died author said, “No part of me feels motivated to freeze my eggs when I don’t think I want to be a mom, but what if someday I change my mind?…I am trying to bet on my future self wanting a thing that my current self can’t imagine wanting, versus just not doing it and risking that someday I might want it and not be able to do it then – and the regret. I am trying to weigh these options and it’s quite complex.”

It is complex! And while I totally get the no motivation thing (egg freezing can take several appointments, shots, and uncomfortable visits, not to mention the cost associated with the retrieval and the storage), I also understand wanting to make sure you (and your future self) have options.

In an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show in Oct. 2022, McCurdy said, “It took me a long time to accept that my mom was not perfect, let alone abusive — it went in baby steps to put these pieces of the puzzle together and to recognize the reality of the pain that I’d suppressed for … decades, at that point.”

Dealing with complicated emotions, trauma, and abuse is hard enough without throwing in a major life decision like becoming a mom. We wish McCurdy the best as she makes this move to protect her future choices, no matter what they may be.
