Jennette McCurdy Opened Up on How She Felt Working With Ariana Grande in Her New Book

Jennette McCurdy, the star of some of Nickelodeon's best-loved shows, most notably iCarly, has opened up about how she felt working alongside Ariana Grande in her new book I'm Glad My Mom Died.

The actress, singer, and now author starred alongside the Grammy-winner in the iCarly and Victorious spin-off show, Sam & Cat from 2013 to 2014, and as well as focusing on her relationship with her mother, the impact working in Hollywood had on her, and growing up as a child actress, the book features a section that reflects on her time with Nickelodeon. Particularly, how she felt the producers of Sam & Cat gave Ariana Grande alleged preferential treatment.

"I booked two features during iCarly that I had to turn down because the iCarly team wouldn’t write me out of episodes to go shoot them," an excerpt via Entertainment Weekly read. And after finding out that Ari was granted a week off from filming to attend an award show, McCurdy revealed how it made her feel.

"Are you kidding me?" she wrote in her book. "So I have to turn down movies while Ariana’s off whistle-toning at the Billboard Music Awards?" She also admitted that she began to "resent being a good sport," because she ended up not enjoying her time at Nickelodeon, noting how she felt the show she was on had "shitty lines."

McCurdy then revealed how she became jealous of Ariana, mainly because she was able to miss work "in pursuit of her music career while I act with a box."

"I frequently make the mistake of comparing my career to Ariana’s," she continued. "I can’t help it. I’m constantly in the same environment as her."

She also spoke about how Sam & Cat wasn't the original spin-off show that she was meant to star in. Instead, the 30-year-old actress was meant to take the lead in a show playing the same character (Sam Puckett), but with a storyline that held more substance. Writing how it was supposed to be a "harrowing tale of a juvenile delinquent turned school counselor," McCurdy revealed that the outcome is something she isn't proud of.
