After establishing herself as the ultimate scream queen in Netflix’s Wednesday and the Scream franchise, Jenna Ortega has officially signed on to her next hair-raising role. On May 9, 2023, Variety confirmed that the actress will star in Beetlejuice 2, a long-awaited follow-up to Tim Burton’s 1988 classic.

Starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Geena Davis, and Alec Baldwin, the original Beetlejuice follows “recently deceased” couple Barbara and Adam Maitland (Davis and Baldwin) whose home is inhabited by the Deetzes (O’Hara, Ryder, and Jeffrey Jones) after their untimely death. To drive the quirky family from their home, Barbara and Adam enlist the help of the mischievous ghoul of Netherworld, Beetlejuice (Keaton).

The plot of Beetlejuice 2 remains under-wraps, but updates are slowly coming out about the delightfully sinister sequel, including details of Jenna’s role. Keep scrolling for everything we know so far about Beetlejuice 2.

What role does Jenna Ortega play in Beetlejuice 2?

Jenna reunites with Wednesday director Tim Burton for Beetlejuice 2. She will play the daughter of Winona Ryder’s character, Lydia Deetz (name a more iconic mother-daughter duo — we’ll wait).

In the OG film, Lydia is the daughter of Charles Deetz and step-daughter of Delia Deetz. An aspiring photographer who single-handedly defined the status of “goth girl,” Lydia is the only one who can see the ghosts of Barbara and Adam Maitland and Beetlejuice.

Who else stars in Beetlejuice 2?

Variety confirms that Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder reprise their roles as Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz, respectively. Catherine O’Hara also returns as eccentric Delia Deetz, People reports.

Apart from Jenna Ortega, other newcomers include Justin Theroux (but his part remains under wraps.) Monica Bellucci and William Dafoe have also signed onto the project, per People. Bellucci plays Beetlejuice’s wife, while Dafoe is suspected to play a police officer in the afterlife.

Has Beetlejuice 2 started filming?

Yes! On May 18, 2023, Winona Ryder was spotted in character in Hertfordshire, England, according to the Daily Mail UK. The actress donned Lydia’s signature goth glam look, complete with her iconic black fringe hairdo. She was photographed in the passenger seat of a car, and although photos didn’t reveal who the driver was, Daily Mail reports that it could be Beetlejuice himself, played by Michael Keaton.

Then, on July 5, People dropped first-look photos of Jenna Ortega on set in Hertfordshire... and do we hear wedding bells? In the snapshots, Jenna wears a white tulle ballgown, veil, and lace-up combat boots. Winona, mother of the bride, was spotted as well, but her Lydia look was obscured by an ankle-length down jacket.

When does Beetlejuice 2 premiere in theaters?

The “ghost with the most” returns to the big screen on September 6, 2024. While that’s a long time to wait (and no, repeating his name three times sadly won’t summon the film any sooner), you *can* stream the original Beetlejuice on Hulu.

Is there a trailer for Beetlejuice 2?

Nope, not yet. The film just got the green-light from Warner Bros., and isn’t due in theaters until September 2024. So, it’ll be a while until we see any teasers or trailers. Sigh.
