Jenna Hawkins Welch, Mother of Laura Bush, Dies at the Age of 99

This Mother’s Day former First Lady Laura Bush celebrates the memory of her mother, Jenna Welch “a true daughter of West Texas.” In an Instagram post on Sunday morning, Laura announced the death of her mother and remembers her great loves: family, books, and nature.

“My memories of reading with her and stargazing under the Midland sky are reminders of the passions that she nurtured in me,” Laura writes. The mother-daughter pair regularly visited the Midland Public Library and Little Women was one of Jenna’s favorite books, according to the Dallas Morning News. She was also a Midland wildflower expert, an impressive amateur birder, and a passionate astronomy student.

In her own Instagram post Sunday morning, Jenna Bush Hager remembers her namesake’s love for the outdoors. “How lucky I was to be named after a woman who taught me how to slow down and appreciate every bird, and every plant in West Texas.”
