Jenna Bush Hager Opens up About Mourning Her Beloved Grandfather in Public

The only thing harder than losing a loved one is losing them in the public eye. Luckily, the family of former President George H.W. Bush, has experienced endless support over the past week and a half.

Returning to her Today post a few days after burying her beloved Gampy, Jenna Bush Hager opened up about the realities of grieving on the world stage.

"Losing somebody publicly is difficult, because you hear people talk about him, or try to weigh his politics, which you know, we’re his kids, his grandkids, we don’t—that’s not what it’s about," she said. "But at the same time, we felt so surrounded by love."

Hager added that sharing the death of her grandfather with millions also created unexpected opportunities for joy—like on the train ride to his final resting place in Texas. The mom-of-two revealed that the family played a game to see if they could get spectators to wave as they passed by.

“We played this game and it just filled us up with such hope and I think not everybody gets to have... they lose their grandparents, they lose people they love, and they aren’t celebrated,” she mused. “He was celebrated!"
