‘Jelly Nails’ Are Trending, and They’re Perfect for Summer

You've definitely seen them on Instagram.

If you're of a certain age, chances are you remember Jellies. The sandals are made of plastic and they're sheer, sometimes clear, but often have a subtle, bright hue. The shoes might best be worn to a day of kindergarten (unless you're into throwback dressingit's happening), but the style also is coming back in 2019 as nail art.

Nail technician Jane Safarian says the look was inspired by nail artist Park Eunkyung's iridescent glass nails. For her version, Safarian wanted to create a design that played with transparency and negative space. "The sheer jelly nails look almost like stained glass when the light shines through them," she told Allure.

To create the look, she starts by "blending different colors of sheer polish for a rainbow-jelly, ombré base, then placing assorted iridescent film decorations on top (hexagonal sequins, cut up strips, and shards). Naturally, the manicure finishes with a top coat."

As a quick look at the hashtag #jellynails will tell you, Safarian isn't the only one bringing kindergarten vibes via her manicure.

Nicole, who goes by _rosasanguine on Instagram, worked with her nail tech Stephanie to create a rainbow Pride-inspired jelly look. Nicole recommends a sheer gel polish with "jelly," "glazed," or "glass" in the name for her take on the trend.

Whether it's rainbow or clear, bright or sheer, there's something about these nails that makes you just want to squish them, isn't there?
