Survivor is back, baby! And that means 18 islanders have landed in Fiji for another year of people sloughing off every modern luxury to see who can hunt, scheme, and fight their way to the $1 million prize at the end. And apparently it’s more intense than ever before.

Not only are people coming right out of the pandemic, stuck inside all day long, but Survivor has had to make serious changes. Since the crew and cast quarantined before the show, that left only 26 days of filming. Which means the show had to ramp things up. A lot. According to host Jeff Probst, who spoke to Entertainment Weekly, "The game design has never been so dangerous."

On September 22, the first two-hour episode of the 41st season aired. And in the first few moments of the show, the show is already wilder than ever. This season, tribes will get only a pot, flint, and a machete. That’s it. No bags of rice, no other type of help. The castaways are all on their own.

So for anyone who needs a refresher, or maybe just wants to relive the whole episode again, we’ve got a recap of all the major things that went down in the first episode of Survivor Season 41.

Here’s what happened in the first episode.

Survivor Season 41, Episode 1 Recap

First off, we meet the three tribes. Ua (Green), Yase (Yellow) and Luvu (Blue). Jeff gives them the grand introduction, and there are a few emotional moments while the cast reflects on one of the worst years in modern history: the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. It's hard to have a reality show this year without mentioning that awful collective memory we all have of the dumpster fire that was 2020. But, of course, there’s a game to play and so without further ado: it’s officially Survivor time.

Everyone starts off on a pirate ship-looking boat instead of on land. Wonder why? Because it’s our first challenge of course! Teams are told to find paddles corresponding to their tribe color (six to be exact), then paddle around the ocean until they get to a key. First person to grab the key gets to go straight to camp.

Green and Blue quickly find their paddles, leaving Yellow searching frantically. As the tribes push off and begin to make their way to the key, Luvu, the Blue tribe, realize they’re moving a little slow. It turns out... they still had an anchor attached to their boat. Yikes. Green pulls ahead for the win, and Yellow only just manages to find their final paddle after all is said and done. Double yikes.

Everyone then takes off in their boats to get to their respective camps.

At the Camps

While the Ua Tribe immediately starts setting up for the next 26 days of castaway living, Yase and Luvu are met with yet another challenge. There are two options: fill two barrels with water using only two members of the tribe, or solve a puzzle all together. The reward: your supplies. If you fail to do it within the allotted time, you won’t get supplies until after the immunity challenge.

The Yellow tribe chooses the water challenge and Xander and Voce to do the work while they set up camp. Luvu makes the same choice, with Danny and Deshawn getting water. It sounds easy, but it’s much harder than either pair anticipated. Because, you know, this is Survivor. And nothing is easy.

And then comes the best part of Survivor, the scheming. This season, it starts right away.

Danny, an ex-NFL player, and Deshawn decide to take an early break and search for immunity idols, which their tribemate, Naseer, catches onto when looking for firewood... and then runs back to tell the rest of the tribe. It’s the first divide brought into the team, but one that doesn’t stick when Danny and Deshawn learn of the betrayal, and start to eye up Naseer with the rest of the group as someone to send home.

Meanwhile with the Green team, 20-year-old JD is talking everyone’s ear off. He’s a little too excited to be here. Everyone begins to get annoyed, already putting JD near the chopping block if the tribe loses the immunity challenge.

All the conversations soon come to an end with yet another twist on just the first day. Jeff wasn’t kidding, this season is more dangerous than ever. Well, for anyone trying to watch the show live and keep all these twists in their head. I mean, really, all these surprises are hard to follow. C’mon Jeff.

The Boat

The twist is that there’s a boat coming. Only one person from each tribe can go, where they’ll “make a decision,” whatever that means, and then return to the tribe. The Green tribe chooses JD, the talker, the Yellow tribe chooses Xander, and the Blue tribe chooses Danny.

The three arrive on yet another island, where they hike to the top together. Each are brought to a galver (that wheel on the ship that directs it), where they’re told to bet their vote for tribal council. It’s a little confusing at first, but here’s how it works:

  • Three people can either protect or risk their vote.

  • If everyone protects their vote, nothing happens.

  • If everyone risks their vote, they all lose their vote at the council for the night.

  • If at least one person protects while the rest risk it, the person who risks it gets an extra vote.

After everyone makes the decision, we find out Danny protected his vote, while JD and Xander didn’t. JD decides to tell an elaborate lie to his tribe about what happened, while Xander tells the truth. Ricard in the Green Tribe suspects JD is lying, and already wants to get rid of him. See, what did I say? All that talking was a bad idea.

Immunity Challenge

Now for the combined test of endurance, strength, and mental acuity, it’s the immunity challenge. For the first one in season 41, it’s a decent test of not only an individual’s prowess, but also what it means to be an organized team. But first, another twist. Enough, Jeff!

Players are each given a die. No, we're not playing Yahtzee. The die represents a ‘Hail, Mary!’ they can call on when they believe they’re in jeopardy of elimination. Secretly, at tribe council, they can forfeit their vote and draw a paper for a one in six chance at immunity for the night. But first, the challenge.

Tribes have to first scale a netted wall, then dig through literal sawdust (dangerous!). Afterwards, teams have to move bags of puzzle pieces onto a slab. Two players have to make way for the movable slab, removing bags of sand and placing them in a designated area.

The only team who seems to have a problem is Blue, with Naseer forgetting one itsy bitsy bag of sand, causing them to move their slab all the way to the beginning while he corrects his mistake. That’s strike two for Naseer.

Yellow and Green begin to bring their puzzle pieces up not one, but two ramps, but not before Blue catches up. Green is the first to make it to the top, and the other tribes follow soon after.

Only two tribe members can physically combine the puzzle pieces. Everyone gets off to a strong start, until Yellow begins to lag behind. Green realizes a little too late they had an extra piece in the bag that would have completed the whole puzzle, meaning Blue takes the win. You’re safe for now Naseer. For now.

Oh, one more thing. The two tribes who lost? They lose their flint, one of the key components of quickly making fire, and have a chance to retrieve it at the next challenge. For those of you keeping score, that’s the third twist. The third. And we have so much more Survivor to go.

Back at Camp

The pressure is on now to choose who’s going home. In the Green Tribe, Sara and Shan failed at the puzzle. So this loss is kinda all their fault. All the tribe members begin to talk amongst themselves, trying to convince one another to decide on a name. The main ones it comes down to are: JD, Sara, and Shan. Another tribe member, Brad, wants to keep JD since they could use his muscle for strength-based challenges, while Ricard just doesn’t trust the guy.

Over at the Yellow Tribe, there’s clearly two names popping up in conversation: Tiffany and Abraham. Abraham says Tiffany was no help during the day, and he doesn’t think she’ll be a helpful asset moving forward. Naturally, Tiffany is threatened by the accusation and wants Abraham gone.

With her life on the line, Tiffany goes searching for an immunity idol and narrowly (like right in front of her) misses an idol in a broken tree branch.

Now time to see who goes home.

Tribal Counsel

Dun, dun, dun. It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for.

Jeff surveys the tribes to see how everyone is settling in. Everyone says they get along, until it comes closer and closer to voting time. In the Yellow Tribe, Abraham gives an answer Tiffany doesn’t like, and she calls him out on it. It’s clear he’s playing the game, giving non-answers to Jeff and trying to play his cards close. It’s a smart strategy, for someone who might not be packing their bags in the next few minutes.

Then, voting goes down. And well, it’s Abraham. He’s the first person to be voted out of season 41. Sorry, bud.

Then onto the Green Tribe. Things really heat up at the end of Jeff’s questions with players already whispering amongst themselves on the first voting night. Ricard sneaks over to JD, telling him to vote for Brad. Then, JD and Shan go off in a corner (hilariously snubbing Sara), to decide whether or not to vote Brad or Sara.

Poor, poor Sara. She asks Shan if she needs to use her die to which Shan replies, “No.” With all this talk about the die going on, every player then decides to put the die in their pocket. Just so whoever is nervous doesn’t feel alone, ya know?

But unfortunately, it’s still Sara who ends up going home. Bummer.
