  • Jeannie Mai will not dance on future episodes of Dancing With the Stars.

  • Jeannie has to sit out the rest of the season because she developed a life-threatening throat condition that has left her unable to perform.

As much as we love watching Jeannie Mai compete on Dancing With the Stars, she’s sadly going to take an unplanned break from the show. She recently came down with epiglottitis, a rare and potentially life-threatening health condition in which the tissue surrounding the windpipe becomes inflamed, according to People.

“It saddens me that I will not be able to continue with the competition on DWTS. My doctors discovered a health concern with my throat, which requires immediate attention and surgery,” Jeannie said in a statement to People.

She continued, “I am heartbroken that my DWTS journey has to end here. The last several weeks have been an amazing learning experience. I have pushed myself to new limits physically and mentally, and I am so proud of how far we’ve come. I can’t thank my partner Brandon enough for being so supportive and believing in me. I also want to thank MAI fans who voted every week and I wish everyone else in the competition the best of luck!”

Jeannie’s pro dance partner, Brandon Armstrong, told Good Morning America that she and the cast “are devastated by the news that we’re gonna have to cut this season short, but Jeannie’s health does come first. Thank you to all the fans that have helped to get us this far and we are praying for a speedy recovery for Jeannie.”

Last week, Jeannie and Brandon managed to secure a 25 out of 30 from the judges for their spooky paso doble to Nelly Furtado’s “Maneater.” Despite the high score, they ended up in the bottom two alongside Monica Aldama from Cheer and dance pro Val Chmerkovskiy, but they managed to advance to the next round.

Wishing Jeannie a speedy recovery!
