Jeanne Muchnick's Best Thing I Ate This Week: Italian-inspired sandwiches in New City
It's sandwich central at Leonardo's Italian Deli & Catering in New City, with delectable creations running the gamut from Joe Joe the Whale (Philly cheesesteak, vodka sauce, fried ravioli mozzarella sticks, French fries) to The Good Vegetarian (avocado, arugula, hummus, tomato, feta).
Italian combos are a specialty. Owner Frank Ficarra, who's had the deli for 3 1/2 years (before that he owned a fast casual Greek eatery in the same space), is a member of Sons of Italy and so likes hanging with the guys there and getting sandwich ideas.
Also, because he grew up playing around with various sandwich combinations, he's always trying something new.
My faves — and the best thing I ate this week— include The Crooner (chicken cutlet, prosciutto de Parma, sundried tomato, arugula, fresh mozzarella, Balsamic glaze and herbed ricotta) and The Joey Cocoa Diaz (Prosciutto de Parma, Prosciutto Cotto, gabbagool, speck, Genoa salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar, Italian herbs, and a side of pepperoncini).

Coming soon: More grab and go, more family meals and more salads.
Ficarra also, come October, plans to add an Italian coffee bar with different flavors of coffee as well as Italian sodas with various syrups.
