We often find ourselves in search of that je ne sais quoi French women seem to have about them. “[While] there are many different French styles, French style is all about dressing casually and yet, at the same time, very elegantly,” says Paris-based American expat and creator Victoria Petersen. Elevated comfort can be interpreted generously, whether it’s in the form of a French-girl capsule collection or must-have French fall trends, so shopping for French-approved staples shouldn’t be as hard as our search for that nonchalant attitude. (Right?) With the help of two French style experts, we vetted a list of the 20 best French clothing brands, from PureWow editor-tested and -approved brands like Sézane and The Kooples to hidden street style gems like The Frankie Shop to renowned designer fashion houses like Dior and Chloé.
The Best French Clothing Brands at a Glance
Meet the Experts
What Is French Style?
“French style is a mix between femininity, boldness and conservatism.” says Bance. “Hear me out. We love a sensual flowery dress, but we would (almost) always buy it mid-length and with enough coverage that we'll feel comfortable living our daily lives wearing it.” It’s no wonder the City of Love makes it a point to tastefully incorporate bits of sex appeal where appropriate. This could take the form of a bright scarf, a unique handbag or a flirty print. And Petersen stresses that you won’t find sweatpants, leggings or sportswear of any kind anywhere—probably one of the biggest differentiators between French and American style. (The latter largely embracing the athleisure trend.)
Rather, the French are proprietors of the idea behind capsule wardrobes. Bance goes on, “We stick to our staples and rarely branch out. This is both our strength and our weakness, because, on one hand, we will always look put-together and elegant, but on the other hand, we find it very difficult to be daring. We love our comfort zone and rarely [divert from] it, which is why—I believe—we are mostly known for our timeless sense of style. Is this a good or a bad thing?” Let us be so bold to assume the former. French style has remained a constant source of elegance and inspiration for many.
How We Chose the Best French Clothing Brands
In our pursuit to find the best French clothing brands, we tapped experts Bance and Petersen for firsthand recommendations of stores and fashion houses that they know, love and shop. We then looked to stores that PureWow editors frequently shop, whether it be directly, online or through department stores. Speaking of which, we attempted to narrow down French stores that can ship to the United States, and included other retailers to shop though, too, when applicable, such as Nordstrom, Revolve, Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue and more. We also considered budget friendly as well as luxury designer clothing brands.
The results? A vetted list of 20 of the best French clothing brands for every type of buyer, from the one who wants a must-have sailor jean to the woman investing in a luxe French forever piece. Enjoy.

1. Sézane
“If you're looking for good quality knitwear, this is the place to go,” says Bance. “They have an incredibly large range of it in a rainbow of colors. This is also my favorite brand for staples. Think: T-shirts and tanks, trench-coats or shirts.” For ten years, Sézane has been the epitome of the classic French style we often envision our French amies to wear, from cozy cardigans to classic Mary Jane heels, though that’s not the only enticing allure. According to Petersen, the brand is one of the most well-known French labels for a reason because it “sells modern, feminine French style clothing at an affordable price.” Whether you’re looking for the perfect pair of heart socks ($20), hunting for a Gaston scarf ($35) to tie around your neck or investing in a timeless leather jacket, Sézane has reasonably-priced, classic and high-quality products that are made to last, as our PureWow editor tested. (Psst…they even make menswear, too.)

2. Maje
We love Maje for its bold, unapologetic approach to French fashion. Wanting to design a wardrobe for the modern woman, fashion designer Judith Milgrom founded Maje in 1998 and the rest is—we’ll say—history. Whether you’re already a fan of the brand or have merely seen the Maje section at your local department store in passing, we’re sure you’ll find something worth purchasing. Best known for daring and confident clothes that combine a feminine feel with a modern edginess, don’t be fooled into thinking they don’t carry staple pieces as well. If more muted, classic silhouettes are your style, there are plenty of traditional pieces to choose from. And you can be sure that your clothes will last for years to come, as the brand prides itself on producing well-made and luxurious ready-to-wear clothing and accessories.

3. ba&sh
Sophisticated and fun, ba&sh is the Parisian label you’ll want to shop if you’re seeking a refined sexy wardrobe. Stiletto booties, printed maxi skirts and tousled blouses are only a small preview of what the Parisian brand offers, and prices can range anywhere from $20 for hair accessories to nearly $2,000 for suede peacoats. The beloved brand is helmed by best friends and founders Barbara Boccara and Sharon Krief, who combined their shared love for fashion to create their dream wardrobe (accessories included), embodying an Anthropologie meets Anine Bing vibe…but make it Parisian, bien sûr.

4. Sandro
“Sandro is a classic French clothing store that always comes out with beautiful pieces,” says Petersen. We’re talking ready-to-wear collections saturated with structured tweed jackets, tailored trousers and sleek A-line knit dresses that exude an air of elegance and femininity. The brand is also committed to sustainability, offering a transparent look into the materials, production, traceability and distribution processes. Not to mention, you can even buy or sell chic pieces at a fraction of the cost with Sandro’s Secondhand site. “I love their basics, but occasionally a dress will go viral, and I can understand why. Most recently it was this long-knitted dress which I kept seeing on TikTok,” adds Petersen.

5. Longchamp
You may be familiar with the label’s distinctive Le Pliage tote, but did you know that Longchamp makes clothing, too? That’s right, this family business makes ready-to-wear collections which include staples like coats, jackets, dresses, skirts, blouses, knitwear, trousers and shorts at median price of $300, though some pieces cost upwards of $800. Much like the unique and timeless quality of their well-constructed bags, you’ll find the same qualities in their clothing.

6. The Kooples
Calling all rock ‘n’ roll devotees! Allow us to introduce an accessible luxury brand that holds the key to edgy style that is anything but boring, aka The Kooples. It originated when brothers Alexandre, Laurent and Raphaël Elicha sought to interrupt the idea of conventional fashion, and focused on dressing couples (i.e., in French slang, kooples). Yup, ladies, instead of thinking about what men would stop wearing, you can now focus on what he should wear. The idea is that couples can walk in and get dressed in complementary ‘fits, from an everyday head-to-toe leather look to suave eveningwear for a date night out. PureWow’s associate fashion commerce editor Stephanie Meraz stumbled across their storefront during a trip to Paris in 2017. “My French friend made me walk in, and I walked out with the most beautiful crocodile-effect leather Emily bag that—at that time—cost nearly my entire student budget, but it was so worth it. I haven’t received more compliments on a handbag since.” Clothes, shoes, accessories and bags are somewhat pricey, though markdowns happen often.

10. Chloé
This Parisian fashion house was founded on the basis of breaking free from stiff formality by French fashion designer Gaby Aghion in 1952, who coined the term “Prêt-à-Porter” (i.e., ready-to-wear), opening up a means of attainability and wearability amid Haute Couture. The tops, jackets, pants and skirts are fluid and imaginative, featuring flared silhouettes, ruched stitching and lines that complement the body’s natural curves. Prices are typical of a high-end designer labels, with most dresses coming in at $2,000 and outerwear at $3,000 or more, but the craftsmanship is impeccable and the quality flawless.

11. Alaïa
If you weren’t familiar with Alaia until now, don’t fret. Petersen recently splurged on a piece from the luxury fashion maison, saying, “I just bought my first Alaïa dress and can't believe I didn't do it sooner. I found my dream LBD here. I got a stunning sleeveless black mini in Paris that is tight around the waist and flares outwards. It's a hyper-feminine design, which is actually rare in France. I'm in love with the look and I know I'll have this dress for the rest of my life!” The same goes for the rest of the label’s garments, which center on sculptural silhouettes and structured lines that enhance the female frame. Think: form-fitting pencil skirts and sheer frocks. The long-lasting high-fashion pieces are unsurprisingly pricey, with the majority of garments costing above $1,000, or much more for designs constructed with lambskin, tulle or lace.

12. Rouje
“Best known for their quintessentially Parisian aesthetic, Rouje is an incredibly popular brand that you'll see in the streets everywhere in Paris,” says Bance. The vestments are designed to highlight the woman, because, after all, “In Rouje, we notice the women first, then what she is wearing,” per Rouje’s founder Jeanne Damas. The designs may be sleek and reminiscent of flattering slip styles popular in the ‘90s—as well as other vintage aesthetics—yet they boast playful charms that make a confident closet. Take, for example, the splashes of color on a staple cardigan, a floral motif on a down jacket or a mixed animal print that totally falls in line with the 'mob wife' aesthetic. Bance’s advice? If there’s one thing you purchase, “go there to buy the Gabin dress, their signature design that is both sensual and feminine.” Noted.

13. Mirae
What began as a mission to offer special pieces of second-hand clothing swiftly turned into one of the most sought-after labels amongst fashionistas moving the needle. At Mirae, you’ll find daring patterns and vibrant splashes of color combined with whimsical silhouettes and trendy details, like rosettes and bows. In other words, these are pieces worthy of a dinner conversation and photo-op. Petersen is in agreement: “Mirae is such an Instagram-friendly French clothing brand. They design bright and colorful dresses that are super sexy and perfect for a girl’s trip.”

14. Courregès
Fans of vinyl miniskirts, moto jackets and mini dresses with a vintage-yet-futuristic vibe will absolutely lose their cool over Courregès’s collection. The French fashion house was created by creative legends and husband and wife, André and Coqueline Courrèges, in Paris in 1961, and the present-day silhouettes, designed by the label’s creative director, Nicolas Di Felice, are still emblematic of its roots. We especially appreciate that designs offer a contemporary take on 1960s Parisian fashion, which feels like a refreshing addition. Chic yet edgy, “they’re known for their vinyl jackets, which have been around since the ‘60s, but they also have an amazing line of skin-tight knitwear that shows off your curves,” notes Petersen.

15. Celine
Petersen and Bance both agree, Celine is a high-end designer label that’s worth the investment if you’re seeking craftsmanship that’s next-to-none, high-quality materials and a luxury name. “My go-to luxury brand if I ever had any,” says Bance. “The style is what we would call in French ‘bobo,’ literally bourgeois-bohème (i.e., bohemian bourgeois), and it [executes] this nonchalant yet incredibly chic aesthetic so well.” Indeed, these elegant pieces are made to last a lifetime if cared for properly. If you don’t know where to begin browsing, we suggest first glimpsing at the coveted Triomphe bag—aka, one of the most-searched bags on Rebag, per Marie Claire’s findings—before perusing the ready-to-wear collection and tracking down your vacation sunnies.

16. The Frankie Shop
“Whether you're looking for a pair of perfectly cut cargo pants or a timeless blazer, The Frankie Shop has you covered,” says Bance. “They sell various trendy brands as well as their own designs and everything is curated to perfection.” A blend of Parisian modishness and New York sharpness, you’ll find a slew of wardrobe staples here with elevated twists, from oversize cuts to faux-leather finishes to asymmetric drapes. If you frequently shop minimalist contemporary stores like Aritzia, Buck Mason, COS or Frank and Oak, then it’s time to add The Frankie Shop to your list of stops. You’ll find similar clean lines and street style takes on corporate dressing for about $200 per item, with some pieces—like coats and outerwear—costing more and others—like shirts and skirts—less.

17. A.P.C.
According to Bance, French fashion house A.P.C. (or Atelier de Production et de Création) is “another great brand for timeless staples. Their designs are particularly good and the materials of great quality. I especially like their leather goods and have been planning on getting a belt and a bag for a while now.” At A.P.C., you’ll find seamless silhouettes and a minimalistic charm in its French basics, like ribbed turtlenecks, sailor jeans and classic cardigans going for $200 or more, depending upon the item and material. As you may have guessed from its name, the company places importance on processes. Per the company, “Without production, creation is merely an idea. And without creation, a piece of clothing will never come to life.”

18. Dior
Revolutionary to the fashion industry, Dior has remained an iconic French fashion house since its inception in 1947. Recognized for prominent silhouettes with cinched-in waistlines, voluminous skirts and seamless tailoring, Dior designs are ultra-feminine and timeless, with silhouettes often boasting the house’s iconic branding as striking patterns for options for men, women, kids and baby. This designer French brand comes at a steep price, but long-lasting investment items that are versatile and can be worn more than once, like a full skirt, tailored blazer or a jacket—per Petersen’s recommendation—make a smart purchase. She tells us, “The famous Dior Bar jacket has been on my wishlist for a while. I even tried it on in the Dior store, but I need to wait for this one. It's probably the most iconic piece of Dior clothing you can own, so if you have the means, I’d definitely go for it.”

19. Saint Laurent
Saint Laurent is one of the most high-end and iconic French fashion houses. With items crafted from some of the finest materials and fabrics that last a lifetime, its designs are inspired by the art and fashion worlds, making for forever pieces that are meant to be passed down from generation to generation. An array of creams, whites, browns, blues and blacks largely shape its soft color palette, and French feminine finishes are at the heart of every design. “If there's one piece of Saint Laurent clothing you need it’s the black Le Smoking blazer,” notes Petersen. “Perfect for wearing over a little black dress or paired with blue jeans, this is a timeless piece of French fashion you should own.”

20. Figaret
“Not as well known in the U.S., Figaret makes amazing cotton button-up shirts that you can wear to work or dress down casually with a pair of jeans,” says Petersen. “They make high-quality Oxford shirts that you’ll have for years, no matter how many times you wash them.” The company’s timeless shirt-making journey began in 1968, solidifying their legacy as a French staple for poplin, linen and cotton dress shirts. Besides traditional button-ups, there are signature shirts, such as the open-neck Carl or the embroidered “Je t'aime” inscription, and made-to-measure options that home-in on care and quality. When we asked Petersen to pick a favorite from the line, the decision turned out to be a no-brainer: “The Marion shirt is a classic style I recommend. It's also very affordable.”

Which French Clothing Brands Can You Buy in the U.S.?
Good news: All the French clothing brands listed above can be purchased directly online, either on the company’s websites or through a retailer, and shipped to the U.S. (Though you may find that some stores with warehouses solely in France like Figaret might incur import duties and extra shipping fees.) Many brands, like The Frankie Shop, A.P.C and Sézane have stores located in cities like New York and Los Angeles, and others may be found in your local department stores like Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s. Plus, other luxury fashion retailers, such as Net-a-Porter, Farfetch, Moda Operandi and The Outnet often carry many of the high-end French clothing brands in brand-new or used conditions and at either pull price or a discounted rate.
What Are the Latest French Fashion Trends?
As you may have presumed from the endless French closet staples that never seem to fade, the French tend to stick to tried-and-true trusted basics. “However, trends come and go, and some make a bigger impression on French fashionistas than others,” reports Bance. Here, the latest French fashion trends to hit the fashion capital of the world.
