JB of GOT7 Just Got a Piercing Under His Eye

The K-pop star kicked off 2020 by getting an anti-eyebrow piercing — as one does.

Some people celebrate the start of a new year by finally getting organized or making a list of resolutions, but if you're JB, you visit a piercer. The leader of K-pop group GOT7 recently visited Charm Studio, in Seoul, South Korea, to not only change out the stud in his nose for a silver hoop but also a new piercing under his right eye. The tattoo and piercing shop posted a photo of JB's new look on Instagram, and it was liked thousands of times in a few hours — before it was mysteriously deleted. Of course, this is the internet, and screenshots are forever.

With his gray baseball cap covering his eyes, I didn't notice the silver balls above JB's cheekbone at first and may or may not have winced when I finally did. An anti-eyebrow piercing, as it's often referred to as, is a bold move. I, too, changed out some of my piercings (all on my ears) to start fresh for 2020, but dermal piercings were not on my agenda. I respect JB's choice of facial adornment, though. The placement of the studs mimics the set of moles underneath his left eyebrow. The diagonal symmetry is genius, if you ask me.

GOT7 fans, or IGOT7 as they are officially called, are conflicted over the new addition to the K-pop star's face. Thousands have written comments on Charm Studio's original post to share their thoughts. Most seem to be confused about the placement choice, while others are cheering him on. My favorites are those encouraging him to take proper care of it to prevent infection. My inner Boca Raton grandmother echoes their sentiments.

Whether JB got a barbel placed underneath his skin or two dermal piercings is unclear to me, but I'm going to operate under the assumption that they are the latter. Generally, "Dermal piercings are a special type of piercing in which the base of the pierce remains the skin," Joshua Zeichner, a New York City-based dermatologist and the director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, told Allure. "After the jewelry is implanted, it takes several weeks for the skin to fully heal around it. Scar tissue essentially forms and anchors around the base of the piercing."

Dermals are relatively permanent and commonly prone to infections if not cared for properly. Zeichner also pointed out that JB's placement is particularly worrisome because of the sensitivity of the undereye area. "Not only is the skin extremely thin, but also there are important blood vessels and nerves needed for facial expression, sensation, and vision," he added.

Basically, JB made a daring decision with this one and must have a pain tolerance as high as Lotte World Tower.
