Jay Peak Opens 100% Of Terrain For Solar Eclipse Skiers

Officials at Jay Peak report that "above or below we got fresh snow. 100% open terrain and 9/9 lifts. Riding high on 35 inches."

Today is also the solar eclipse, and people gathered on the mountain to take in the wonderful phenomenon. Some people even brought cameras or took pictures with their phones, but nothing beats seeing it live, in real time. See below.

The upper mountain lifts closed at 12:30pm today. At 2pm, the lower mountain lifts closed (for the viewing of the eclipse).

With the pairing of the solar eclipse, today was likely one of the best of the season for Vermont skiers.

Jay Peak is directly in the path of totality during the solar eclipse of 2024. Closer than any other major ski area in the United States. Jay Peak adjusted their usual operating hours for Monday, April 8th so no one was on the mountain during totality.

Although the lifts did not spin as normal, there was a science lecture from Meteorologist and Educator Chris Kudek at 4pm, and multiple live sets from the Pink Talking Fish throughout the day.

Meteorologist Tim Kelley wrote on April 5th that "as of 8am Friday morning, we have been snowing for about 39 hours...~ And we are passing 30" of new snow."

Over the last 7 days, Jay Peak saw 37 inches of fresh powder, to be exact.

Last week, conditions were a little brutal to ski, but the snow still made for great conditions when things cleared up.

Lately, the resort's weather reports indicate that "the wind has died way down, and it's powdery dry snow! Our snow conditions do not get any better than this in April.. or any month for the most part."

If you're at Jay Peak right now, we're jealous. Not just because of the new snow, but because you got such a good glimpse of the eclipse. The rest of the week will still be skiing well, even if there is no rare solar phenomenon taking place during your session.
