Jay Leno Under Fire for Jeremy Renner Joke Following Motorcycle Accident

The TV personality joked about his recent motorcycle accident that resulted in a few broken bones.

Jay Leno has had a tough few months. After recovering from severe second-degree burns following a car fire in his garage in November, he was involved in a scary accident while riding an old motorcycle about a week ago.

After opening up about his most recent accident, Leno tried to make light of it with a joke referencing actor Jeremy Renner's dangerous snowplow accident that many found off-putting.

On Jan. 27, Leno tweeted: "I was riding my motorcycle up in Lake Tahoe and I came around the corner and bam, I crashed into Jeremy Renner’s snowplow."

While some people didn't mind Leno making light of the situation, others felt Leno's attempt at a joke was distasteful, with one person replying, "Not funny. Renner broke 30 bones in the process of saving his nephew’s life. Respect to the guy. Pure guts."

Another person retweeted Leno's joke and wrote, "Glad he’s okay, but my god, the bar remains low."

"Bro was saving his nephew. Swing and a miss," commented someone else in criticism of Leno's tweet.

One tweet in response read, "Well at least we know the accident didn’t give him a sense of humor."

Many more Twitter users wrote similar messages, saying things like "too soon," and "That is not funny. It’s disrespectful," while others seemed to find the tweet funny.

Quite a few responses read, "He's still got it," with one commenting, "This is funny. Leno refuses to take himself too seriously. He has now nearly died twice in a few months and still has his sense of humor."

Leno's tweet comes after the TV host broke his collarbone and ribs, along with other injuries, when he was launched off a motorcycle on Jan. 17. Meanwhile, Renner survived a terrible accident that left him in critical condition on New Year's Day that led to multiple surgeries and weeks in the hospital. He is currently recovering at home.

Speaking to the Las Vegas Review-Journal about the latest incident, Leno described how, after the garage fire, he wanted to keep the motorcycle accident quiet, saying, "You know, after getting burned up, you get that one for free. After that, you’re Harrison Ford, crashing airplanes. You just want to keep your head down."
