Jason Wu's Spring 2024 Clothes Look Moth-Bitten — It's Craftsmanship

Jason Wu is known for making simply beautiful clothes (enough to trigger awe-inspired profanity from team Fashionista). But for Spring 2024, shown Sunday at New York City's Sunken Garden by Isamu Noguchi, he subverted our expectations by tattering his garments into a new aesthetic.
Titled "Solstice," the collection begins with distressed, off-white pieces that have the same look as... moth-eaten clothes. But no, Wu did not accidentally leave his collection in a moth-filled attic. Rather, it's a technique that displays his team's craftsmanship abilities, maintaining elegant silhouettes while playing with texture.
This spirit foreshadows the rest of the collection, where composition is repeatedly used for experimentation. A range of translucent fabrics, some embroidered, give dimension to looks without adding bulk, while black crocheted tops offer an airy foil to the collection's opaque leathers, knits and tweed.
Wu also seemed to use the show's setting as a mirror to the runway. Regal jackets and tailored shirts feature prints of nature-inspired imagery. It isn't the detail in the linework that is most notable, but the brilliant pops of color on otherwise monochromatic pieces. Of course, Spring 2024 also includes plenty of the Taiwanese-Canadian designer's signatures: sharp silhouettes that slim at the waist, gowns fit for a First Lady and immutable elegance.
